'Teen Wolf's Dread Doctors Have Greek Myth Ties

by Keertana Sastry

It's official: Teen Wolf has taken its penchant for confusing fans to a new level. I've never had more questions about an episode of television as I do about last week's "Strange Frequencies." We know that Hayden and Liam have been abducted and taken prisoner by the Dread Doctors, Kira has gone missing and left a number "115" on her bedpost, Parrish fire punched Theo and killed Stiles' jeep Roscoe just to get Josh's dead body from Deaton's office to take to the Nemeton, and Melissa McCall found a dead body on her dining table. Oh, and let's not forget that everyone had the worst hallucinations known to man. So what on Earth can we expect for Monday night's episode of Teen Wolf, "Ouroboros"? Well, if the title means anything, perhaps the Dread Doctors have a connection to Greek mythology.

So far in Season 5, we have gotten a few hints and connections to Greek mythology, the first being the fact that the Dread Doctors are creating chimeras for... some purpose or another (I still can't quite put my finger on what the Hell they're doing). Chimeras come from Greek mythology and are monstrous composite creatures made up of several different kinds of beasts. It was defeated in Greek myth by a hero named Bellerophon, but what's interesting to note is that according to Homer's poems, a chimera is also noted to be a creature of "divine origin." Why are the Dread Doctors hoping to create this perfect hybrid creature?

The title for Monday night's episode, "Ouroboros," is also derived from Greek mythology (as well as ancient Egyptian and Indian myth) and could connect to the Dread Doctors and/or Jordan Parrish. The Ouroboros is an ancient symbol of a snake eating its own tail. They were thought to be a symbol of re-creation and continuous cycles of life. Plato described the Ouroboros as the first creature in the world that could be self-sufficient and was circular in nature and life. It would make sense for the title to be describing Jordan Parrish, as a common theory is that the deputy is a phoenix, which lives its life in cycles. But what if the title is also talking about the Dread Doctors and their cycle of creating chimeras?

If we can figure out what the Dread Doctors have planned with the chimeras they're making, especially the successful ones like Hayden, then maybe this connection will become stronger. I certainly hope that's the case, because when it comes to this season of Teen Wolf, I'll take all of the clues I can get.
