Talking about bodies can be really awkward for a lot of people, which makes it really easy to change the topic and never look back. But back in 2008, Hillary Clinton and Tyra Banks talked about cellulite, and my image of the current presidential candidate just changed (again). During a recent Q&A interview, Banks opened up about how easy it was to chat with Clinton, when they originally met, and how far from politics the conversation went.
While visiting The Tyra Banks Show, Clinton talked in a whole new way, which totally took Banks — and I'm sure the audience — off guard. "I actually like Hillary personally," Banks said in the New York Times article. "She was just so free-flowing." The two got on the topic of cellulite, which Clinton easily opened up about, almost as if she were talking to a really good friend. "Oh, my god, she was so relaxed and cool. We talked about cellulite and she was like: 'Yeah, I’ve got cellulite, and I look in the mirror, and I don’t have any clothes on, and I don’t like everything I see,'" Banks said. "It was that kind of conversation." What I would do to go back in time and be in that audience.
Now years later (and in completely different circumstances), knowing that Clinton felt so comfortable talking about something most people try to hide, is pretty cool. She understands that not all women are built like Barbie, and it isn't the first time she's made a totally body positive comment before. The number of times that Clinton has stood up to haters is probably too many to count. And like Banks, I think that's so cool.
