The 'Awkward' Cast 'Ships Matty & Jenna Too

by Lindsey Kupfer

High school is coming to a close at Palos Hills and I think everyone is wondering whether or not Matty and Jenna will end up together on Awkward . They have been through so many ups and downs over the years that I'm worried they may not make it. In an attempt to find new hope for the couple, I decided to enlist some of the series' cast ahead of the Awkward Season 5 premiere on Aug. 31. to see if they are 'shipping Matty and Jenna too. And it turns out, if you thought you were the biggest Jatty fan, then you have clearly not met Molly Tarlov. Even though her character Sadie Saxton isn’t a fan of the Awkward couple, Molly is completely on board with them and always has been. “Matty and Jenna are my favorite couple I’ve ever met in my whole life,” she says. “I mean I seriously watch the show and I am not immune to the connection of Jenna and Matty.”

I too have been on the Matty train since the very beginning, but when I ask Brett Davern, who plays Jake Rosati, if he thought the couples on the show would make it in the real world, his answer makes me think twice. “I’m kind of just rooting for all the characters to sort of leave high school in high school,” he says. “You learn a lot after high school, especially in relationships. When you’re in high school everything seems so important and seems like the end of the world. There’s so many people to meet, so many experiences to have post-high school.”

He continues, “I think if i’m just speaking as a viewer … I mean it would be fun to see Jenna and Matty or Jake and Tamara and all these relationships because we love those characters, we’ve grown up with them, but I think in a real world-type setting, you have those experiences in high school and you learn from them, but it’s a big world out there.”

However, in the end, Molly and Jake both say that Matty and Jenna could definitely make it work in the long-run, but only if they took a break. “Let me put it this way,” Davern says, “I think they could be together forever, but I think they’re going to have to go to college and experience four to five years of not being together and other relationships … and if they happen to be back in their hometown at the same time and meet up, then yeah.”

I think we are all on the same page when we say that Jatty is forever, just not right now. There will certainly be more hardships ahead, but as Tarlov says, “I believe in Jenna and Matty.”
