Lena Dunham's Emmy Dresses, Ranked

by Rosie Narasaki

The Girls creator has endured her fair share of red carpet criticism along the years, but I've always been a fan of her style (which continues to wildly polarize critics). After all, she might not always hit the bullseye, but Lena Dunham's Emmys dresses are always huge risks, as are most of her outfits. I'll take an asymmetrical architectural beaded Giambattista Valli number over a boring sparkly black column dress (almost) any day of the week. Suffice it to say, Dunham's never shied from a red carpet challenge, and some of her best and/or kookiest looks have been from the Emmy Awards of future past.

Take, for instance, the graphic lace Prada number she wore to her first Emmys back in 2012 — girl knows how to bring the drama. And she only upped the ante in subsequent years, following the striking lace gown up with an ultra-bright floral dress (also from Prada). Her 2014 dress may have been the wildest of all — she paired Andy Warhol-approved makeup (and a platinum bob, incidentally similarly Andy Warhol-approved) with some absolutely showstopping layer cake-esque Giambattista Valli couture. So, as we prepare for all the red carpet goodness that is the Emmys, why not take a stroll down memory lane? And while we're strolling, why not rank the gowns from most sane to most insane while we're at it?

This dress had something of a heavy look to it, but hey — you've got to love the eye-catchingly graphic lace. Also, she had some pretty on point eye makeup game:

Dunham's sister, Grace, totally hit the nail on the head when she joked that this dress looked like the red carpet by product of a Delia*s catalogue — which only makes it more awesome, if you ask me. Oh, and again, strange pout-y faces aside, she kind of killed it in the makeup department:

OK, I know I should technically hate this look, but it's sheer craziness factor is so high that it created a wormhole, and I love it. I mean, come on: THAT FLUFFY SKIRT.

I can't wait to see what she wears for the 2015 Emmys.
