Which New J. Law Movie Will Win An Oscar?

by Emily Lackey

If you've been to the movies recently, your first 15 minutes in the theater were likely spent chowing down on Junior Mints and looking up at the stunning face of Jennifer Lawrence. Why? Because pretty much every single movie preview these days is for a film starring Jennifer Lawrence. Girl’s been busy. In fact, thankfully — because of, I’m assuming, her popularity and killer work ethic — we have an entire season of Jennifer Lawrence movies to look forward to.

Specifically, as the weather gets colder, we can all look forward to seeing her as Katniss Everdeen in The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2 on Nov. 20, and in the appropriately seasonally-named movie, Joy. If neither of those float your fancy, there’s also X-Men: Apocalypse currently in post-production and a slew of other projects either filming or on their way. In other words, you could have yourself a veritable J. Law fest if you really wanted to. (Not a bad idea for a theme party, come to think of it.)

So with all of these Jennifer Lawrence movies on the horizon, is there a chance she will win another Oscar during next year's award season? Because, I think we all need another year of J. Law’s amazing acceptance speeches, am I right?

I mean, the woman literally made Oscar season last year. (For me, at least, she was the highlight of the entire thing.) What she wore, what she said, and how many times she tripped on the hem of her dress or the lip of a stage was an absolute delight. So, with all of these movies of hers coming out in the middle of Oscar season, I’m assuming she’ll be making repeat appearances at all of the award shows in 2016. But, which movie is she the most likely to win an Oscar for?

As much as I’d love to see The Hunger Games have its day in the critical limelight, there is way too much that Joy has going for it to even hold a candle to that buzzed-about film. For instance, in Joy, Lawrence plays the eventual matriarch of a family who goes on to found an entire business dynasty across four generations. If there is one thing the Oscars love, it’s an epic. Facing a ton of betrayal, love, and loss, J. Law’s character in this film sounds like a female version of The Godfather to me. But, like, without all of the guns and murder. (Although maybe not. Remember that scene in the trailer where she’s wielding a very scary looking rifle thing?)

The other sign that this might be the most Oscar-worthy movie she’s starring in this fall? It’s basically the same team that she won an Oscar with in 2012: Joy has a very similar cast to Silver Linings Playbook (Bradley Cooper, Robert De Niro) and a very similar creative crew (it’s written and directed by David O. Russell). Considering that cast of creative characters is part of what set her up for her 2012 Oscar win for Silver Linings Playbook, I think she stands a much stronger chance of winning for Joy than anything else.

So let’s all just cross our fingers and say a little prayer to the Oscar gods. Award season wouldn’t be the same with our J. Law, so I’m just hoping one of these films makes her the center of it.
