Cate Blanchett Made Fake Tattoos Look Chic

by Sienna Fantozzi

Just when you had her pegged as the classic and regal beauty that she obviously is, Cate Blanchett goes and wears fake tattoos on the red carpet, according to InStyle, and makes you question everything you thought you knew about her style. I mean, really now, did you ever think you'd hear "Cate Blanchett" and "fake tattoos" in the same sentence?

The Truth star attended the New York Film Festival screening of her new movie, Carol, and walked the red carpet in a very uncharacteristic dress. Blanchett wore a Yacine Aouadi tea-length black sequined dress, with a sheer neckline and sleeves that had tattoo-esque black ink scrawled all over them. The effect? It looked like she was covered in faux tattoos. I think I stepped out of Hot Topic a time or two in junior high with a similar arm sleeve.

Though her dress brought the edge, the Australian actress chose to keep everything else a bit more polished, with classic black pumps and her hair in chic, side-swept loose waves. It's kind of weird...but also brilliant. I love how versatile she is, and that she doesn't pigeon-hole herself into one particular style. Plus, you can't say she doesn't keep us interested.

She may even make a case for faux tattoos becoming a thing again.

They're even better up close.

But this is far from the first time Blanchett has surprised us with her fashion choices. Just last week she wore a head-to-toe neon pink suit. I mean, what?!

Then there was the crochet blanket dress:

I'm sure she was comfy, though?

This pantsuit was not exactly typical of Blanchett's Golden Globes style.

I guess we just didn't expect her to wear a dress so large. But the parachute vibe is actually pretty cool.

Here's hoping she keeps those surprises coming.
