'Supergirl' Adds A Familiar Face To The Mix

by Lindsey Kupfer

The premiere episode of Supergirl gave viewers a history of Kara Zor-El, an introduction to main characters, and the exciting sight of our leading lady saving an entire plane full of people. Now this week's new episode will add some names that should be familiar to any DC Comics readers. Commander Gor will join Supergirl in "Stronger Together," and even if that name isn't familiar, his face should be — at least if you're a fan of a certain ABC Family series. Commander Gor is played by Eric Steinberg, aka Wayne Fields, Emily's dad on Pretty Little Liars. Steinberg has a long career that goes beyond PLL, however, this role may prove to be one of his best.

In the comics, Commander Gor is a native to Krypton and a member of the military. He possesses the same powers as other Kryptonians like Supergirl and Superman, which include heat vision, super hearing, solar energy absorption, enhanced vision, the ability to fly, superhuman strength, and more. He lived in the city of Kandor, which was stuck in a forcefield and shrunk in size, and remained trapped there until Superman freed him. Still, Commander Gor and Superman don't usually see eye to eye, and tend to be at odds even though Gor isn't necessarily a villain. Considering that comic background, I think we'll see a similar dynamic between Kara and Gor on Supergirl, and if he sticks around the series, the two may eventually have to face off in some way.

I hope Gor does become a recurring fixture on the series, because Steinberg's past roles have made me a fan. Here's what you should know about the actor bringing the Commander to life on CBS.

Pretty Little Liars

We don't see him very often, but Steinberg plays the military father of Emily. He's a tough, but caring dad, and certainly far from the worst parent in Rosewood.

Mortal Kombat: Legacy

In 2011 a new live-action Mortal Kombat web series was released, essentially serving as a prequel to the video game and revealing the history behind its characters. It aired on Machinima.com’s YouTube channel and went on for two seasons. Steinberg played Sub-Zero, a main character in the Mortal Kombat world.

The Young And The Restless

Steinberg's largest role to date was as Ji Min Kim on the popular soap opera The Young and The Restless. He played the chemist and CEO for about a year between 2006 and 2007. He also had a short stint on Days of Our Lives as Dr. Kim.

Smart House

His reporter character didn’t even have a name, but that doesn't matter, because he still appeared in one of the best Disney Channel Original Movies ever.

Star Trek: First Contact

In 1996, Steinberg starred alongside Patrick Stewart as Paul Porter.

TV Guest Roles

Steinberg has popped up on tons of series over his years as an actor. He’s appeared on Anger Management, CSI, The Mentalist, Torchwood, Stargate SG-1, Without a Trace, 24, Nip/Tuck, Numb3rs, NCIS, Charmed, JAG and more. Now he can add Supergirl to that growing list, but we'll have to wait and see whether this is a guest role, or something more,
