We all knew they'd take the stage at the American Music Awards to perform "Marvin Gaye" — but most of us didn't expect that Charlie Puth and Meghan Trainor would make out at the AMAs as their performance concluded. The singing itself was top-notch, but it's safe to assume that's not what the water cooler chatter will be about tomorrow morning — because social media immediately erupted with excitement, and it's clear that many fans are already 'shipping this duo. Within moments, there was already rampant speculation that they're dating in real life — or that they at least deserve Oscars for that super convincing romantic moment.
The music video for "Marvin Gaye" involves a whole lot of kissing — so it's likely that Puth and Trainor's make-out sesh was simply part of the performance. But, for people who were just acting, they did look awfully cozy and comfortable locking lips — and fans certainly took notice. Puth and Trainor are far from the first performers to lock lips as part of a performance — who could forget Madonna's infamous three-way kiss with Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera at the 2003 MTV VMAs? But, that's not stopping fans from collectively going wild on social media.
Here's a clip of the kiss heard around the world:
And, here's how fans feel about it. (Spoiler alert: They're totes shipping this pair.)
If the kiss was purely a performance device, Puth and Trainor are going to have some very disappointed 'shippers on their hands. And, based on these reactions, they'll probably express their frustration in all caps.
