Songs Every Woman Should Listen To At Least Once

by Alaina Urquhart-White

Some songs stick with you long after you stop listening to them. Everyone has that one jam that they can faithfully return to for much needed comfort or reassurance. We all use music in our own ways, but why not use it to get inspired? Sometimes, as ladies, we don't see the greatest representation in music. It would take years to sift through all the songs that have contributed to the constant slew of derogatory female stereotypes or lyrics that can portray women as mere objects. Not cool, music bros. Luckily, in between all the bad apples, there are still plenty of songs out there that every woman should listen to at least once in her life — the kind of songs that really lift you up, instead of bringing you down.

Luckily, there's not just one genre that's managed to cater to us — which is perfect because while I love rock, sometimes you just need a little R&B too. I will try to cover your every musical whim for any mood that might strike you. And while this list may not include every pro-woman anthem out there, I cut it down to the best of the best, and those songs that will pump you up the most. These songs all have one very important thing in common: they are fun and uplifting. And no matter where you are, or what you're doing, I think we could all use a little something to get us feeling a little more lifted. So pop one of these on and dance through your house because I promise you, it's a good idea and you will thank me.

1."A Woman's Worth" by Alicia Keys

Perfect for: When you want to scream to the world that you are worth it, damnit. Plus, Alicia should always be on your playlist.

2. "Survivor" by Destiny's Child

Seriously, who hasn't needed to list off the various ways that their lives were not only continuing without their recent ex, but actually thriving? We have all been there, so, in a way, we are all Destiny's Child.

3. "No Scrubs" by TLC

Because scrubs are not welcome here. Also, the video was an awesome piece of futuristic everything.

4. "Girl On Fire" by Alicia Keys

You are on fire! Let Alicia confirm this fact for you. You have both feet on the ground and you are burning it down.

5. "RESPECT" by Aretha Franklin

I mean, this is the ultimate girl power song. Respect. It's all you're asking. And you deserve it, girl.

6. "None Of Your Business" by Salt-N-Pepa

Salt-N-Pepa are legitimately required listening for everyone, but they've got a special place in my heart for empowering their fellow ladies. These women are fierce and unapologetic. Also, they will make you dance like there's no tomorrow.

7. "I'm Just A Girl" by No Doubt

Gwen Stefani was the punky girl of my dreams then and she still is now — Blake Shelton romance and all. Her girl power anthem is so catchy and has just the right amount of tongue-in-cheek awesomeness.

8. "The Way You Look Tonight" by Frank Sinatra

Old Blue Eyes is music for any occasion. This song is just easy listening and tells the story of a guy who really digs his lady. We can all applaud that sentiment. Throw this on as you are getting ready and you have yourself a ego boost.

9. "Stronger" by Britney Spears

This jam will literally make you want to go out and topple a building or something. It's a Britney infused energy drink in song form.

10. "***Flawless" by Beyonce

You really did wake up like this.

11. "Man, I Feel Like A Woman" by Shania Twain

This is simply one of those anthems that make you proud to be a woman. Strut around and sing it loud and proud.

12. "Shake It Off" by Taylor Swift

When the haters have got you down, Taylor's got you. Plus, it's a simple fact that this song will never not put you in a good mood.

13. "Wannabe" by Spice Girls

The Spice Girls brought "Girl Power" to the masses, so their place is solidified on this list simply by right of that. This jam is everything, though. Raise your hand if you always sing Mel. B's rap part as loud as humanly possible. Then go fire up your Spotify and dance it out.
