7 Drake Songs That Are Definitely About Jelena

by Caitlyn Callegari

Just when I think I can’t love Drake anymore than I already do, he goes and does something completely ridiculous to endear me to him. Case in point, Drake commented on Justin Bieber’s picture of Selena Gomez, saying, “Damn though this was a Jelena current day flick,” after Bieber explained it was a throwback photo. Now, I don’t know if it was sarcasm or sincerity in his words, but I’ll give him the benefit of the doubt and say that the rapper was channeling all of that Degrassi angst into championing a troubled love story.

So, now that we can assume that Drake has a real appreciation of Bieber and Gomez’s relationship, we can also assume that their romance has maybe, possibly, definitely inspired a song, or two, or seven of his. Listen, as a writer myself, I can attest that not all things come from personal experience. If you’re emotionally invested enough, a secondhand experience will serve you just fine, creatively. So, are you with me on this one? Because the more I think about it, the more Drake’s sullen and sentimental tunes are coming to life.

Here are seven Drake songs that are most definitely about Selena Gomez and Justin Bieber’s relationship:

1. "Hotline Bling"

The lyrics of regret are too perfect to their current situation. Too fitting. THERE ARE NO COINCIDENCES IN THIS WORLD.

2. "Best I Ever Had"

OK, I know what you're saying: "'Best I Ever Had' came out in 2009, Caitlyn. You're wrong. You're so wrong." Well, no, Internet, no I'm not. Because who the hell says that Drake doesn't have premonitions and dreamed Jelena into life? That's right, no one. So, that goes for the rest of the songs I list here that may be pre-Jelena prime, too. (Just go with it, will you?)

3. "Fancy"

Hair done, nails done, everything did. Sounds like Biebs's rosy view of Gomez to me.

4. "Take Care"

Gosh, that impassioned push and pull finally realized in verse. I'm just glad that Drake found the appropriate outlet for his empathetic relationship woes.

5. "Doing It Wrong"

Def had this playing on repeat while recording "Purpose." I see you, Justin. I. See. You.

6. "Marvin's Room"

I can see it now. Whenever this tune would pass his Spotify, Biebs would thrust his fist up to the sky and shriek, "ZEDD!" I assume it was an emosh and reflective time for the boy.

7. "From Time"

But that's none of my business...

Think of this, think of me, when Drake's next album, If You're Reading This Justin, Selena Says It's Too Late hits the stands. I'll be in your conscience, smugly saying, "I told you so."
