Who Will Play Han Solo In The 'Star Wars' Spinoff?

by Amy Roberts

If you're a fan of Star Wars, then you're probably already totally pre-occupied with planning out your entire Star Wars: The Force Awakens screening night, scouring the internet for spoilers, dissecting every piece of footage available online so far, and basically, re-watching the trailer again and again. But Hollywood is already moving on, you guys. Star Wars: The Force Awakens is already signed, sealed and (almost) delivered, and the next galactic fish it's looking to fry is the as yet unnamed Star Wars spinoff movie (so top secret it's working under the code name "Red Cup"), and namely finding an actor to play the young Han Solo.

The Hollywood Reporter has released the news that no less than 2,500 actors are currently auditioning for Han Solo's role, and, from the sounds of it, every young, working actor in Hollywood has been putting their names forward as a possibility. Though Star Wars: The Force Awakens went to tremendous lengths to find relative unknowns for the title roles, the Star Wars spinoff seems to be taking a different tact entirely, with a vast variety of known actors attached to the audition list.

The quality and suitability of some of the names on the list is a jumble of talent with Oscar nominees rubbing shoulders with trash TV stalwarts, and smaller names going up against some mighty well known competition. But what can all of them bring to the role? And who carries the greatest young Harrison Ford charisma which makes them capable of playing such an iconic character? Let's take a look at the essential run down.

1. Hunter Parish

Best known for Weeds and, perhaps most importantly, for being responsible for the most heart-wrenching plot line The Good Wife has ever known (I miss you, Will Gardner!), Parish is the perfect combination of being beyond beautiful, endlessly charming but also of being capable of the sort of alluring dark edge that Han Solo requires from an actor.

Han Solo potential: 5/5 (I can see him in the costume, and it is good).

2. Aaron Taylor-Johnson

Taylor-Johnson seems something of a natural choice for the role of Han Solo, given his roles in The Avengers: Age Of Ultron and Kick Ass, so it would be easy to imagine him stepping into the Star Wars universe with an undeniable ease.

Han Solo potential: 3/5 (He can walk the walk but I'm not convinced he has enough of a cocky swagger to truly talk the talk as well).

3. Chandler Riggs

Surprising, no? The Walking Dead star might seem a little too young to be stepping into such big shoes, but watching his acting skills develop throughout the zombie series has proved that this actor has more to him than merely wearing his Dad's sheriff hat and babysitting his little sister.

Han Solo potential: 1/5 (It'll take a little more to convince me that he's ready to play a cocky space cowboy just yet).

4. Rami Malek

The Mr. Robot star has gained quite the fanbase for himself (I can't say I blame them, that face is something else), and he definitely oozes the sort of young-Ford cool that the role definitely demands.

Han Solo potential: 3/5 (He could definitely nail it).

5. Dave Franco

Initially, this felt like a totally left field choice for the role, but, after thinking about it some more, the Bad Neighbours star would be pretty perfect. Han Solo had more than a little comedic charm to his character, and Franco could definitely deliver that smarm with staggering charm.

Han Solo potential: 4.5/5 (We could be onto a winner).

6. Ed Westwick

Come on, how amazing would it be to have Chuck Bass playing Han Solo? I can hardly contain my joy at the prospect. As a major Gossip Girl fan, I still harbor a desire to see Westwick move on to great things — plus he has charm oozing out of every vessel of his body. Seriously, just look at that picture. He's a Jedi mind trick* in human form (*yes, I know Han Solo wasn't a Jedi, but you get what I mean).

Han Solo potential: 2.5/5 (It would only ever work if Westwick answered every villainous interrogation with I'm Han Solo, in true Gossip Girl style).

7. Colton Haynes

The Teen Wolf and Arrow star is, well, a total dreamboat — that's undeniable. He's also the strongest name on the list in terms of playing some potential action scenes believably as his role in San Andreas proved.

Han Solo potential: 4/5 (He basically has everything you could want for a young Han Solo!).

8. Miles Teller

Probably the best actor on the whole list, Teller is truly a phenomenal talent as his role in Whiplash proved formidably. I've no doubt that Teller could play just about any role that came to him with spectacular prowess, and Han Solo would be no different. He'd bring a power to the role that the rest of the actors on the list would struggle with.

Han Solo potential: 5/5 (No question).

9. Tom Felton

Yes! Draco Malfoy, himself! Though Felton could definitely bring a spring heeled appeal to the role, I have my doubts that he can carry the strength of the character as well as he could simply charm his way out of it.

Han Solo potential: 2/5 (This is not the Han you're looking for).

10. Landon Liboiron

The Hemlock Grove star does dark and mysterious super well and has a spellbinding effect whenever he's on screen. But it remains to be seen whether he has the sort of quick wits required to truly fight back with killer lines and a sharp shooting arm.

Han Solo potential: 2/5 (He's not quite ready for the role).

11. Nick Robinson

Robinson showed the world that he was ready for action with his recent starring role in Jurassic World, though, like Riggs, he still seems a little too young to be playing such an iconic character.

Han Solo potential: 3/5 (Though he might be young, Robinson definitely has a quality to him which could suit the character).

Time will tell as to who will become the chosen one for the upcoming Star Wars spinoff, but one thing's for sure: whoever it is will have big shoes to fill and a lot of fans to convince. Good luck, fellas!
