Justin Bieber's History With The Grammys

by Michelle McGahan

As the 2016 Grammy nominations announcement draws nearer (Monday, Dec. 7 at 8 a.m. ET will be the date and time to see if your faves score any noms this year) all of the important questions are coming out. Like, will Taylor Swift's 1989 sweep everything like it so rightfully should? Is 5SOS eligible to win a Grammy this year? Has Justin Bieber ever won a Grammy? Well, for music fans who need a refresher and for Beliebers who probably already know the answer but may be choosing to ignore it, don't worry: I've got you covered in the Bieber Grammy department.

Though JB doesn't have any golden gramophones to add to his collection of bling (yet), he has two nominations under his belt. He was nominated twice in 2011 — for Best New Artist and for My World 2.0 as Best Pop Vocal Album. But since this answer is kind of a bummer (at least if you're a Bieber stan), fear not, good Beliebers: 2016 could be Bieber's year for his very first Grammy Award. And if not this year, then next. Because Bieber is eligible for some potential nominations in both. Let's discuss.

While Bieber's comeback album Purpose (which dropped on Nov. 13) missed the cutoff to be eligible for any Grammys this year (only music released between Oct. 1, 2014 to Sept. 30, 2015 would have the potential to be nominated), the first two singles from the album — that would be "Where Are U Now" and "What Do You Mean?" — could very well be in the running this year. Both tracks not only garnered the Biebs critical acclaim, but chart success as well, with "What Do You Mean?" scoring Bieber his first #1 on the Billboard Hot 100. Purpose, fortunately, will make the cutoff for 2017, so we'll have to see what happens there.

So, while Justin Bieber isn't the proud owner of any Grammys as of 2015, 2016 could be his year — we'll just have to wait until Monday (and then, if he scores any nods, the actual Grammy Awards itself) to find out.
