Celebrities That Rock Their Visible Roots

by Gina Jones 2

If it's good enough for Madonna, then it's good enough for me; and when it comes to hair, there's no exception. Celebrities rocking light hair and dark roots give me a ton of inspiration and pride when it comes to my own grown-out roots (at least until I get paid and can afford bleach again). The style is one of the ultimate lazy girl hair hacks, so if your roots are noticeably growing out, I'd advise you to call it a look and carry on with your life. In fact, your roots will probably match your dark eyebrows and lead you to be complimented Romy And Michele style: "You look so good with blonde hair and black roots; it's like not even funny."

Since Madonna made the look popular in the '80s, the hair trend has never stopped being cool. Although high school friends might call you out on it when you head home for the holidays — at least mine do — it's a look that has many Hollywood aficionados to back you up. Because if they can pull it off, why can't you? OK, I might not look like Beyoncé, but I'm certain that Queen Bey would be totally on board with my dark roots and blonde hair combo. Here are just 15 celebs to draw root-y inspo from.

1. Madonna

The original. The icon. The queen of dark roots and blonde hair. Nobody has done it better since, IMO, but we can try anyway.

2. Nicki Minaj

Whether or not this one's a wig, Nicki Minaj has rocked this look more times than I can count and I'm so glad. It looks so darn good on her.

3. Rita Ora

This singer is partly known for her glorious blonde hair, but I just adore when she rocks her root growth. It adds a little bit of edge to this otherwise polished star.

4. Charlotte Free

This model shot to fame a few years ago for her bright pink hair and goofy demeanor. She's so versatile that she rocks almost any look, especially blonde hair with dark roots.

5. Kurt Cobain

I don't think I've ever seen a picture of Kurt Cobain with his hair perfectly dyed, which was definitely a part of the whole grunge vibe.

6. Courtney Love

The controversial love of Cobain's life, Courtney Love is another of my style icons, right down to her lovely roots.

7. Niall Horan

Guys don't have to miss out on this divine trend. And TBH, I think it looks just as good on every gender.

8. Miley Cyrus

Her blonde pixie cut is basically iconic by now and the extra touch of dark roots helped Cyrus keep her punk rock edge.

9. Beyoncé

Everything about Beyoncé's looks seem meticulously planned and perfect, meaning that her roots are definitely a statement when she chooses to rock them. And a gorgeous one at that.

10. Drew Barrymore

This one's a little bit more on the ombre side of things, but Barrymore's grown-out roots prove that long roots can look just as gorgeous as short ones.

11. Rihanna

Rihanna is a woman of many hairstyles and looks, and each one she pulls off effortlessly. I think this shaved sides and roots combination is one of my favorites, though.

12. Kristen Stewart

Although it was entirely for her role in American Ultra, I think Stewart pulls off this orange hair and dark roots combo like nobody else could.

13. Chloe Nørgaard

Known for her constantly-changing hairstyles, I have to say the ones that incorporate roots are often the best.

14. The Olsen Twins

After making a name for themselves in the fashion world, it's not unusual to see one or both of the pair rocking dark roots with their blonde hair. And it only ever adds to their impeccable chicness.

15. Kylie Jenner

Another wig fanatic, Jenner's naturally dark hair means that blonde wigs with natural locks suit her perfectly.

So I hope I've proved all the haters of this trend wrong. Visible roots are clearly a bona fide look, and one that's been passed down from decade to decade, and celebrity to celebrity. I'm definitely going to pull out this list next time somebody tries to slate my glorious dark roots and blonde hair combo.
