The One Thing to Know About Kylie Jenner's Tattoo

by Jessica Willingham

I'm not surprised that Kylie Jenner got fresh ink this week. The youngest of the Kardashian-Jenner empire already had a tiny red heart on her arm, and her S.O., Tyga, is covered in ink. So what's so special about the latest piece? Well, here's the one thing you need to know about Kylie Jenner's latest tattoo: It's the phonetic spelling of "sanity."

Choosing "sanity" as a word to forever write on her skin is, well, a little insane considering Jenner's outrageous lifestyle. I mean, how many people do you know were gifted a white Ferrari 482 Italia on their 18th birthday, courtesy of their rapper boyfriend? Probably not many. The only thing more interesting than her word choice is her spelling choice: Jenner chose to spell "sanity" phonetically. According to dictionary.com, phonetic spelling is the "representation of vocal sounds which express pronunciations of words" and the "system of spelling in which each letter represents invariably the same spoken sound." Interesting.

Getting a tiny word tattoo is not a new trend, but phonetic spelling may be. Tons of celebs and everyday folk alike have jumped onto the tiny script tat trend, choosing small words or phrases to immortalize a mantra.

Before this recent flood of "just breathe" and "love" tattoo was the '90s trend of getting a Japanese or Chinese symbol of a word (brought back to the new millennium for a hot minute thanks to Justin Bieber and One Direction's Zayn Malik).

Words are always a popular choice, but a phonetic spelling is definitely unique.

Another big difference in Jenner's tattoo from recent trends is that it is red. Black and white ink have been chic here lately, and red is way out in left field. It does go nicely with her (possibly) only other tattoo, the tiny red heart. Are monochrome, phonetically spelled tats the next thing? Only time will tell, but I think it's safe to venture that her nearly 47 million followers might take the hint and start phonetically spelling anything and everything, in ink or otherwise. I mean, this is the girl who got us to use matte brown lipstick. Anything is possible.
