Sneakers and Evening Dresses, It's Now a Trend

Sneakers for runways are officially a thing. Between Dior and Chanel couture tennis, sports fashion at DNKY Spring 2014 and the recent debut of Givenchy's Creative Director Riccardo Tisci’s line for Nike, the humble athletic shoe now belongs to the world of high fashion. Expect to see the look pop up on blogs and Instagram accounts everywhere.

The most daring part of this trend is the idea of wearing sneakers with a dress... an evening dress, in fact. I would love to give this a try, but images of Melanie Griffith in Working Girl come to mind, and not in a good way.

All we mere mortals can do now is take a few notes from the pros and hope their sage wisdom will not fail us.

Here are a few tips straight from the Spring 2014 shows for how to get the sneakers-with-dresses trend right.

Go Really Flirty

Because athletic shoes add a casual feel to your look, go extra feminine with your clothes to create a flirty feel.

Pump Up the Volume

Lots of facbric up top can help balance the volume sneakers add to your feet.

Be a little Matchy Matchy

Don’t be afraid to let your outfit echo your footwear. Pull out colors from your shoe to create a cohesiveness.

Try Sheers

Pair your sneakers with a sheer dress. The diaphanous fabric will play well with the heavy shoe and keep the outfit feminine.

Sleek is Chic

A figure flattering maxi dress is an easy way to try this trend without major style capital being lost. Make sure the maxi has simple lines.
