Soonam Kapoor Makes A Cameo In The Coldplay Video

by Mary Grace Garis

If you are a person with eyes, ears, and a heart, you've probably already seen Coldplay's "Hymn For The Weekend" featuring Beyoncé by now. The visually stunning yet musically still-Coldplay video has so far been considerably divisive. On one hand, Queen Bey has never looked more ornate and colorful. On the other hand, that ornate-ness comes with the fact that the music vid is full of cultural appropriation. But, among the ruins, there is one shining star: Sonam Kapoor is in the video for "Hymn For The Weekend."

"But wait, who is Sonam Kapoor?" some of you may be asking. Kapoor is a major, major, major Bollywood star who has credits in about a dozen Indian films. She's a style maven and a philanthropist several times over (she has her hands in many charities). Oh, and she's also the daughter of Anil Kapoor, who was basically the Regis Philbin figure in the Oscar Best Picture winner, Slumdog Millionaire. In other words, she's kind of a big deal.

And though this isn't technically Kapoor's first music video appearance, it is her first exposure to the world of American pop, and you bet that she was excited by it. “I love Coldplay’s music and so does the world. It was a huge honour to be a part of the video. It’s a great concept and I had a lot of fun shooting for it,” Kapoor told Times of India on Thursday. She also took her affection for the project on Twitter, claiming it was "a story to tell" her grandkids. Awww!

OK, so where exactly is Kapoor in the music video? Her entire presence is very blink-and-you'll-miss it, but she shows up towards the end at about the three and a half minute mark. Let's break it down real quick.

She First Appears Running Through Some Kind Of Stone Building

She looks gorgeous and is showcasing some pretty majestic frolicking right there. Like, look how her hair just floats, my god.

Then We Get A Close Up Of Her Seriously Intense Nose Ring

It makes that septum ring you got on St. Mark's Street when you were 15 look like a wimp.

And Then She Releases A Bunch Of... Is It Butterflies Into The Wind?

It could maybe just be a selection of very wind-delicate flower petals, since it looks like they're all puddled up at her feet (and maybe some are on her dress?)

So make no mistake, the cameo itself is very brief, albeit beautiful. I at least feel comforted by the fact that someone in the actual Indian entertainment world gets some screen time alongside Beyoncé's character. No word on in Kapoor might pop up when Coldplay (and Beyonce) play the Superbowl on February 7. But, for now, to see Kapoor and the rest of this aesthetic feast, make sure to scroll down and watch the video below.
