Not Even Football Can Stop 'Downton' From Airing

by Kelly Schremph

When it comes to the power of period dramas, no one quite harnesses the success of that genre quite like Downton Abbey. Full of style, biting wit, and the struggles within the hierarchy, the series has become an institution unto itself and made us yearn to be apart of their elegant world. So given the limited time we have left with these characters before the Downton Abbey series finale, it's important to cherish every single moment. I know that, you know that, and so does PBS, which is why I'm pleased to announce that Downton Abbey will be airing during Super Bowl Sunday with a brand new episode during its usual time frame at 9 p.m. Because, let's be honest, it would take more than a little football to keep the House of Grantham from making their weekly debut.

I, myself, have never been a huge football fan (an understatement to say the least), so I'm always way more interested in what else is airing during the Super Bowl rather than the actual game itself. So you can imagine just how pleased I was to realize that my Downton regime would not be disturbed. After all, sport enthusiasts shouldn't be the only ones who have something to look forward to at the end of the weekend.

As for why Downton Abbey is still airing, I think the answer is fairly simple. While many shows would normally shy away from competing against such a huge sporting event, Downton is likely not too concerned about achieving high ratings considering this is their final season. It's not as though their dip in viewership would impact another season pick-up, so they're willing to keep it business as usual. But even if that wasn't the case, when has anyone on Downton ever cowered to anyone or anything ever? So really, it's just not in their nature to let another broadcast have all the fun. The Dowager Countess simply wouldn't stand for it.

So while the vast majority of the country will have their eyes glued to a football field, you can find me dressed in my finest attire (aka pjs) and eating scones with some of my all-time favorite British companions. Go ahead and just try not to be jealous. I dare you. Because don't let their sophisticated demeanor fool you — these characters can tackle their fair share of obstacles just as well as any athlete. Trust me!
