Translating 'Downton' Quotes Into Modern Rhetoric

by Kelly Schremph

It's difficult to see any beloved television series come to a close, but something tells me that the final season of Downton Abbey is going to hit us all extra hard. In a society so engrossed by technology, it was nice to be transported back to a pre-wifi era every week and catch up with the Crawleys. So now that Downton Abbey Season 6 is about to premiere (well, in the States, anyways), I'm feeling extra nostalgic and trying to find any and all ways to talk about this glorious series before it takes its final bow. And what better way to do that than translating a bunch Downton Abbey quotes into their modern-day rhetoric counterparts?

Between the Dowager Countess' sassy one-liners and Lady Mary's straight forward remarks, viewers have fallen in love with these characters' cheeky retorts time and time again throughout the past five seasons. But what if these iconic quotes suddenly morphed into 2015 jargon? What would be their modern day equivalent? It's a question that I became determined to answer, which is why I've rounded up some of the best translations I could come up with. So sit back, relax, and watch how these turn of phrases would measure up nowadays.

1. "No She's Not Being Rude, Just Wrong"

Translation:

2. "I'm Always A Failure In This Family"

Translation:

3. "My Dear Fellow, We All Have Chapters We Would Rather Keep Unpublished"

Translation:

4. "I Cannot Find The Words To Say How I Feel"

Translation:

5. "I Haven't Got Round To It"

Translation:

6. "So Put That In Your Pipe & Smoke It"

Translation:

7. "I Take That As A Compliment"

Translation:

8. "You'll Find There's Never A Dull Moment In This House"

Translation:

9. "The Suspense Is Killing Me"

Translation:

10. "No One Wants To Kiss A Girl In Black"

Translation:

11. "Do You Think I Might Have A Drink?"

Translation:

Cheers to a great final season!
