The Pros And Cons Of Being Single

by Eliza Castile

In case you missed the chocolate advertisements, massive sales on flowers, and the fact that all your single friends are griping about it on social media, it's Valentine's Day, and you know what that means: A new Twitter hashtag to commemorate the holiday. This year's edition is #SingleLifeIn3Words, which the singletons of Twitter are using to discuss the pros and cons of riding solo on the most romantic day of the year — or just to shout their loneliness into the void. Don't you just love Valentine's Day?

The holiday is one of the most divisive out there; most people tend to either love it or hate it, often depending on whether they're in relationships at the time. After all, it's one thing to choose not to celebrate Valentine's Day because you're secure enough in your relationship that you don't feel the need to shove your happiness in people's faces; it's entirely different to not even have the option of celebrating. (Admittedly, that's debatable — gotta love Galentine's Day.) Even for someone who's totally happy with the independent life, the endless parade of advertisements, movies, and friends implying that we should be unhappy can sting a little.

#SingleLifeIn3Words sums the situation up for pretty much all us singletons this year, whether you're happy, bitter, or somewhere in between. Take a look at some of the best uses of the hashtag below — then you can go back to however you're celebrating Singles Awareness Day. (I highly recommend a date with a glass of terrible wine and a "celebrity of your choice"-shaped body pillow.)
