How To Do Kylie Jenner's No Makeup Makeup Look

by Eliza Florendo

Kylie Jenner and make up go together like peanut butter and jelly, like Ben and Jerry, and like pizza and ranch dressing (if you disagree you're wrong). Which is why Kylie Jenner's no makeup selfie seems so contradictory and surprising. Say what? The queen of contouring and lipstick revealing her natural state? Seems pretty rare, but it does exist. And there's a way to pull it off easily!

I mean, come on, this young lady's beauty look is so iconic in today's world that she's got her own lip kit. And it sold out almost immediately. At only 18 years old, the freaking New York Times even wrote an article titled "Kylie Jenner's Beauty Routine: How She Keeps It Real." Meanwhile, at almost 25, I can barely get my eyeliner correctly before I walk out the door. Don't even get me started on my brows. As Abbi from Broad City says, "they're sisters, not twins. They need to be treated as such." Amen to that.

As Jenner says in the Times article, most of the photos she puts up on Instagram are from photoshoots, when she's fully done up. But if she's just seeing people, she won't go with the heavy make up look. With 52 million followers (for scale, her big sis, Kim Kardashian West, has 61.2 million, and Taylor Swift has 67.1), she certainly has lots of fans that adore her full on, and more relaxed beauty looks.

Jenner posted this selfie on January 21, in what looks like silk pajamas, long hair, and with a natural make up look, wearing maybe just mascara and eyeliner. Comments read, "You look sooooo good babe," "Beautiful as heck, damn," and "So cute,Kylie." Seems like her fans dig this minimal to no make up look just as much as her dolled up look.

So how do you nail the no make up make up look, exactly? Well, it starts with super fresh, healthy skin.

1. Concealer

NARS Velvet Matte Skin Tint Broad Spectrum SPF 30, $44, narscosmetics.com

Step 1 is your foundation and concealer. The more natural you want your look to be, the lighter your concealer should be. This one finishes matte, and includes SPF. Can't get better than that.

2. Bold, Bold Brows

Lancôme Sourclis Tint Longwear Eyebrow Pen, $26.50, sephora.com

Strong brows are the second most important part of the no make up make up look. Groom those babies! And the thicker, the better. It's true. Fill in those beauties with this eyebrow pen, then comb upwards. And then freak out over how good they look.

3. A Tinted Balm

Clinique Chubby Stick Moisturizing Lip Color Balm, $17, shop.nordstrom.com

Here's where it gets tricky: You want a faint color on your lips, even a shine, but nothing too bold. Clinique is one of my go-to brands, and I swear by this tinted lip balm.

4. A Touch Of Mascara

Benefit Cosmetics Roller Lash Super Curling & Lifting Mascara, $24, ulta.com

This mascara will give you length, volume, and thickness. Can't go wrong with all of those three things. Long, full lashes will give your minimal make up look that extra punch, without all that extra eyeliner and shadow.

5. A Really, Really Good Cleanser

CeraVe Hydrating Cleanser, $5.99, target.com

It all starts with a clean, healthy face. And CeraVe is a no muss, no fuss, miracle brand that's my go-to. Plus — It's pretty inexpensive.

6. Color Up Your Cheeks

Perricone MD No Blush Blush, $35, perriconemd.com

The name says it all. For a natural look, you're going to want a super subtle, warm pink or red. Try to stay away from the punchier hues — Those tend to look less natural. This gives you a healthy looking color without looking to made up, and applies like a dream.

It's so contradictory, but the minimal/no make up look is even harder to achieve than full on glam. But fear not. It is possible, with the right products and experimentation. The most important thing is to find products that work for you and your skin. Go on and start trying it out!
