Did the 'Transformers' Ad Live Up to the Hype?

by Meredith Lepore

It is kind of impossible to imagine a Super Bowl without some major movie trailers. And, in the last decade, it's become impossible to imagine a Super Bowl without a Transformers trailer. Though the upcoming Transformers: Age of Extinction movie brings on a different leading man (Mark Wahlberg), we're treading on some familiar territory: The franchise has aired big game ads in 2009, 2011, 2012, and, this year, 2014. No wonder the trailer for the trailer for Michael Bay's Transformers: Age of Extinction was the most anticipated ad of this year, according to a Fandango poll. (It didn't hurt thatBay has been teasing the trailer himself for months, announcing the spot would be unveiled at the 2014 Super Bowl on his website on Dec. 5.)

And it certainly lived up to the hype. The trailer was classic Bay — hello big scenic explosions! And though Wahlberg was a welcomed presence, the Dinobots took things to a whole new level. (Did you see that pterodactyl Dinobot?! No? Then watch the trailer below immediately.) "The Transformers movies have always been huge crowd pleasers, and the addition of Mark Wahlberg certainly brings more anticipation to the fourth film," said Dave Karger, Fandango's chief correspondent. "Plus, fans haven't seen any previews for Transformers 4 yet, so it's the biggest true debut of the Super Bowl."

Damn straight. Watch the Super Bowl ad for Transformers: Age of Extinction below, and count down until June 27, 2014 to see it in theaters.
