This Is The Secret To Adele's Flawless Cat Eye

by Augusta Statz

This artist has come to be recognized for many things: her voice, her meaningful lyrics, her uncanny abilities at carpool karaoke and of course, her cat eye. The Cut interviewed one very important person, makeup artist Michael Ashton, and came to find the secret to Adele’s infamous cat eye. As you might’ve guessed, winged liner that flawless isn’t easy to achieve, but with a little practice and some tips from Ashton, maybe the rest of us can come close to that Adele-status liner. Hey, a girl can dream.

So, how does Ashton achieve the very Old Hollywood, glamorous feel with his liner? Well, it’s all about mixing products, or as he calls it, “product cocktailing.” He starts by outlining the shape of the liner on the lid, working from the inner corner to the outer corner, using gel liner. He works that into the root of the lash line and continues until he’s reached the desired thickness. Then, a waterproof liquid liner with a fine tip is used to sharpen the line. Finally, the last step is adding the winged tip at the end. If there’s any clean up to be done, he recommends using Bioderma Crealine and Muji thin cotton tips, which he always has handy.

So, like I said — applying this liner is no easy feat, but it’s so worth it in the end. I’d like to give this method a try, but it’s definitely going to take some practice. If anyone needs me, I’ll be in the bathroom for the next few days, just trying to get this right.
