There's No Shame in Her Game

by Ivy Jacobson

Perhaps Dakota Johnson has changed her tune a bit. Three months ago, the 24-year-old actress who's set to play Anastasia Steele in Fifty Shades of Grey revealed that she thinks the cheesefest BDSM book was an "incredible love story." She also said that adding in the whole sex thing (basically the reason for the whole plot) to the "love story" is what makes it perfect, because "sometimes, you feel a little bit naughty." Well, I guess those rehearsals seem to be going more saucily than we thought (I pictured a woman in a Jane Austen novel giggling behind a fan) because she now has a new outlook on her role. In an interview with Elle, Dakota Johnson seems ready and raring to go when she was asked why she's the perfect choice to play Anastasia.

“I don’t have any problem doing anything. The secret is I have no shame,” Johnson says.

Well, well. I can't tell if that's what she thinks, or what Elle wants people to think, since she's in thigh-high stockings on the cover and flashes her bra throughout the whole photo spread. And does this mean that there's actually going to be straight-up erotica onscreen and will give her something to be shameless about, or is Johnson just trying to recover from rumors that the Fifty Shades of Grey movie will be way less racy than the book?

Reading the book, I found myself more interested in the ways they were breaking each other down emotionally than the sex scenes, says Johnson. I think there’s a part of a woman that wants to be the thing that breaks a man down.

Hmm... I still don't think that "breaking each other down emotionally" is the message that E.L. James wanted to get across in her book, but hey, it's better than saying it's an "incredible love story." But keep trying, Dakota. And as for a woman breaking a man down, I think it's nice when both sexes can break down metaphorical walls for the one they care about. But I get the sneaking suspicion that diehard fans will want to see other things being "broken down" in the sex scenes — amirite?
