17 ‘90s Songs That You Heard At Every School Dance

by Emily Lackey

If you ask me, back in the day, there was nothing in the world like being 13-years-old and on your way to a middle school dance. It was a feeling closely rivaled by being at the actual middle school dance, waiting for the perfect song to come to allow you to ask the person you were crushing on if — GULP — they would like to dance. Whatever your favorite moments were from those iconic times (I'm sure they very — we all have different experiences!), I’m positive that at least one of these ‘90s songs that played at every school dance was a part of it. Maybe it was the song you waited all night to hear because you knew every word, or maybe the song you and your friends had choreographed a ridiculously cheesy dance to. Hey, maybe it was the one song that made you feel all the feels. Whatever it was that drew you to these songs, they were the ones you heard at every single school dance, and hearing them now likely brings back all of the feels for you.

So, sit back and enjoy these amazing songs from the ‘90s that were totally your jam at every single school dance you ever went to. Warning: You may start to feel all of the feels from this list, too.

1. “Pump Up The Jam” – Technotronic

A ‘90s dance classic.

2. “Groove Is In The Heart” – Deee Lite

I dare you to listen to this and not break out dancing.

3. “All My Life” – K-Ci & JoJo

Cue the slow dancing and awkward waist-holding.

4. “Rhythm Is A Dancer” – Snap!

You know you want to stand in a corner somewhere and look super cool every time this song comes on.

5. “This Is Your Night” – Amber

Every dance attendant’s anthem.

6. “I’ll Be” – Edwin McCain

If they played this one last, look out. Hearts were about to be broken.

7. “Basket Case” – Green Day

Because every good school dance needed a mosh pit.

8. “Buddy Holly” – Weezer

The song that coaxed all of the boys standing along the edges of the dance floor to jump in on the fun.

9. “Iris” – Goo Goo Dolls

This song still gives me goosebumps. That’s how powerful it was in all of our lives.

10. “My Name Is” – Eminem

A highly censored version of this song was played at every school dance everywhere.

11. “I Want It That Way” – Backstreet Boys

No school dance was complete with the Backstreet Boys.

12. “Vogue” – Madonna

Because everyone could dance to this.

13. “Bye Bye Bye” – *NSYNC

Similar to the Backstreet Boys, no dance was complete without an *NSYNC hit too.

14. “I Don’t Want To Miss A Thing” – Aerosmith

The song that elicited thoughts of romance and Ben Affleck in a wife beater. (Armageddeon, anyone?)

15. “This Is How We Do It” – Montell Jordan

Admit it: You choreographed a dance to this song too.

16. “Genie In A Bottle” – Christina Aguilera

The song that made all of your chaperones super uncomfortable.

17. “Wannabe” – Spice Girls

The moment that you and your friends took the dance floor by storm, without fail.

Doesn’t this make you want to be 13 again, all awkward and full of confused feelings? Yeah, me neither.
