Why Sophie Turner Really Licked That Tyrion Mask

by Jordana Lipsitz

The Faceless God isn't the only guy in town with a knack for masks. As I'm sure every Game of Thrones fan has seen evidence of, during 2015's San Diego Comic-Con, Sansa Stark herself, Sophie Turner, licked a surprisingly life-like mask of Tyrion Lannister. This year, Turner went on Conan and explained the story behind her licking the Tyrion mask. Her explanation? Though she admitted not much of the night is memorable for her (she was, apparently, "in a happy state"), she did remember enough to explain that a fan came up to her in a Tyrion mask, and her, “being the loyal wife that I am, I just gave it a quick lick.” I mean, why not?

The most insane thing about the mask is that it definitely looks like Tyrion actor Peter Dinklage's actual face — to the point where Turner actually said that people thought she was licking Dinklage's face, and not that of a mask. To that, Turner said, "I’m not going to do anything to dispel those rumors, Peter’s a sexy guy. He has a wife, so I don’t think he’d be too pleased.”

I think the biggest lesson to be learned from this is, where does one get a mask that is as terrifyingly life-like as the mask Turner licked? After doing a little investigating, I can tell you it's actually easier than you'd think! It turns out, that exact mask was on eBay for a while: According to TMZ, soon after the images of the actress licking the mask became known, creator Landon Meier did not wash the mask or fix the hair Turner had licked before he put it up for auction on eBay with an asking price of $5000. Unfortunately, someone has already purchased the mask — but never fear, Meier has a company called Hyperflesh, so there could always be more GoT masks where the Tyrion one came from.
