See The Inside Of 'Kimmy Schmidt's Dressing Room

by S. Atkinson

Ever wanted to get up close and personal to the "just taking a break between scenes" hangout space of the rich and famous? Gurl, we hear you. In this video, the Kimmy Schmidt cast's dressing rooms are filmed in all their deliciously drab glory, courtesy of Glamour Magazine, and we get a charmingly expansive tour from Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt cast members Tituss Burgess (who, if you hadn't guessed already, plays Titus Andromedon) and actress Ellie Kemper (Kimmy Schmidt). Though there's not a huge amount of square meters being covered in the tour, the amount of emotional square footage the camera covers is considerable, with in-fridge content and "commissioned" art all being viewed.

The most intriguing thing about the short video is how, despite having similar amounts of space (or is it in fact the same room? Is this whole thing a weird satire? Answers on a postcard, please), Burgess and Kemper have managed to do wildly different things with their extremely tiny bare white walled rooms. This made me think: we should play a game. A battle of the rooms. Game of Dressing Rooms, if you will. But who will take the iron throne? And who will languish in the darkness? Please ensure you've watched the video first so we can all reach an entirely objective conclusion about who did up their dressing room better.

Initial Impressions

As "we" say in showbiz, you never get a second chance to make a first impression. Burgess's dressing room boasts the harsh neon lighting of a state prison, depressing black and white prints, and, while he's trying to save that all-important first impression via a seriously intoxicating kimono, just, no. This looks like the office cubicle of my nightmares. Meanwhile, Kemper has seems to have sensible installed some soft floor lighting and is ensconced in an office chair that's as adorable as it looks comfy. All hail queen of interior, Ellie Kemper.

Use Of Fridge

Two mini-fridges, two very different uses. Burgess employs his for a miniature refrigerator's only sane use: booze and cheese. I'm especially enjoying his combo of what looks like cava with Babybel. Meanwhile, Kemper uses hers as a perch for her scented candles. Ugh, really?

Artwork

"This is a print...that I did not choose," says Burgess, while Kemper is eager for us to know that the art in her room was commissioned by her personally and depicts her family. I'm calling bullsh*t on that last one, especially after she points to an identical splotchy painting and says it's one of her drawings. Nice try, Kemper. Still, on a purely aesthetic level, I reckon a painting that looks like a Rorschach test beats out a heavily photoshopped image of the car counter in Monopoly easily, right?

While Tituss Burgess definitely gives the audience the best tour (his side eye as he claims to check Glamour's website "every day" is worth the video production costs alone), I'm afraid I'm going to have to concede this Game of Changing Rooms to Kemper. The lighting's soft, the furnishings are striped and the art is ink-blot beautiful. She just needs to up her fridge game to really rule things on set. All hail your new queen!
