Chelsea Handler Talks About Trump ... With Kids
On Tuesday, Chelsea Handler published a hilarious video to her YouTube channel talking politics, voting, and who will lead the country in 2016. Together, the kids and Handler talked about some of the important issues that have come up over the course of the presidential primaries, such as border security, a blanket ban on Muslims entering the country, and even abortion.
She asks the kids right away, "Let's talk about politics, what are your thoughts?" and their hands shot up immediately as they were excited to share their perspectives — or things they've heard at home — about the current state of the U.S.
One girl started off the conversation on the Trump train, stating "So Trump is actually, he's a good guy to, like, party with and stuff, but he will never be a good man to run the country." Handler, of course responds by asking the young girl how often she parties, to which she and another kid in the group respond "a lot."
One kid, who said he identified as a Trump supporter suggested that the GOP nominee could probably "get a bit grumpy" but that he would be a good leader, and should build the wall to keep us safe from Muslims. The other children in the room try to make it clear that Muslims aren't bad people, and Handler clarifies that the wall would be at the U.S.-Mexico border and has nothing to do with Muslims. She says, "Muslims aren't coming from Mexico."
What's especially important about this video is how much these kids know — and don't know — about what's happening in the U.S. presidential elections. And what's concerning to some degree is the way they have picked up on some of the dangerous rhetorics circulating regarding different communities.
Even so, one girl brings up how Donald Trump is so bad that he even had a song written about him, and Handler asks if she can sing it, even though there are lots of "bad words." But they soon got to the topic of Hillary Clinton, when one kid chimed in "this one's about Hillary," and whispers "She's looking for abortion."
The best part is seeing a group of kids talking about politics that they don't know much about. However, they probably know just about as much about abortion, Muslims, and immigration policy as any other so-called "expert."
