Watch Derek From 'Bachelorette' Sing & Play Guitar

by Molly Freeman

Considering the fact that the contestants on Season 12 of The Bachelorette wrote a song for JoJo, I think it's safe to say more than a few of them have some musical talent — even if the chorus of that song was simply the guys repeating JoJo's name over and over again. But, there is one Bachelorette suitor you may not have known has some musical ability; Derek Peth can sing and play guitar, which we know because he has his own YouTube channel where he demonstrates both these talents (as well as his improving ability to light himself in a way that doesn't make it seem like he lives in a cave).

So far on this season of The Bachelorette, Derek has flown relatively under the radar despite getting a one-on-one date in week two (and comparing himself to Harry Potter during the first night, which I will personally never forget). Still, he hasn't quite made it to frontrunner status alongside Jordan Rodgers and Luke Pell and nothing he has done could warrant him being given villain status, but he hasn't been eliminated yet. So we still don't know very much about him. However, if you'd like to know whether his cover of "I Will Follow You Into The Dark" by Death Cab for Cutie is worth a rose, I've got you covered.

I Will Follow You Into The Rose Ceremony

"I Will Follow You Into The Dark" is one of those songs that every Millennial guitar player should have in their repertoire. It's more current and less cliche than "Wonderwall," but just as beloved by everyone who would be wooed by a dude with a guitar.

Everlong Group Date

According to the description under the video of Derek's cover of "Everlong" by Foo Fighters, it's one of his favorite songs. It's also the most recent video on his YouTube page, though it was posted August 2015. So don't get excited for new videos on a regular basis.

A Lovestruck Derek

Another throwback song is Derek's cover of "Romeo and Juliet" by Dire Straits, which (fun fact!) was released before both Derek and JoJo were born.

Nice and Slow One-on-One Date

Branching out a bit from the typical singer-songwriter covers, Derek is also able to take an Usher song and make it acoustic, which is pretty impressive. However, his description of this video, that "Usher is almost always better acoustic," might be fighting words.

Thinking Out Loud In The Confessional

Bonus! This video comes from a separate YouTube account belonging to Brittni Donaldson, who sings a duet with Derek on their cover of "Thinking Out Loud" by Ed Sheeran.

So, Derek's YouTube videos may not be very recent, but they do allow him to demonstrate his musical talent. Hopefully we'll get to see more of this side of Derek shine on The Bachelorette!
