We Finally Know Where Ilvermorny Is In America

by Dasha Fayvinova

The moment it was announced that a North American school of magic named Ilvermorny was part of the Harry Potter canon, the race to find out more information began. Questions like where is Ilvermorny located , what are the names of the school houses, and how was the school formed dominated the Potter-verse. Luckily, J.K. Rowling knows that we deserve some answers and released an entire post on Pottermore disclosing that information and more! So grab the closest wand, put on your most comfortable cloak, and enjoy.

What do we now know about Ilvermorny? The North American wizarding school was founded in the 17th century by Isolt Sayre, an Irish orphan who came to America aboard the Mayflower. She is a descendent of Salazar Slytherin whose harmonious parents were murdered by her prejudiced aunt, who kept her out of Hogwarts to stop her from mingling with "Mudbloods". Disguising herself as a boy after stealing a wand passed down by generations in her family, Isolt came to America with the goal of learning about magic without restrictions. All of this badassery makes Isolt a very compelling and inspiring addition to the Harry Potter world. I've always admired the female characters in J.K. Rowling's work and to get another tough, smart and compassionate character makes my little heart soar with pride.

Isolt's journey after landing in America is one for the ages. She saves two other magical children from a new creature called the Hidebehind. She saves and befriends William the Pukwudgie, who — mark my words — will be the Dobby to this new generation of Potter fans. After falling in love with a Muggle named James and several other misadventures, Isolt bands together with her friends and creates Ilvermorny. It stands at the highest peak of Mount Greylock, and is concealed by magic spells and enchantments. Hidden from view with the help of a magical misty cloud, Ilvermorny and its four houses became the home for American witches and wizards alike.

First Look: Ilvermorny

Thanks to Pottermore we have a moving image of what the new American school looks like as well as some of the characters we will with out a doubt fall in love with. Just look at that zoom in, it's enough to bring a tear to your eyes! An interesting fact about the giant tree that grows inside the school's gates is that it's grown from the wand Isolt smuggled into the country. Whomping Willow part two, anyone?!

The video released on Pottermore also shows Isolt, her journey to America, her battle with her evil aunt and the cast of character she encounters. You can watch the full video below and feel the chills creep up your arms from excitement.

Hopefully this entire story is made into more movies, because I am already clamoring to learn more about everything and everyone that's been introduced to us.
