Selena Now Has The Most-Liked Photo On Instagram

by Michelle McGahan

No hyperbole here: Selena Gomez is an Instagram legend. Seriously: Not only is she the most followed person on the app (just shy of 90 million followers and counting), but Gomez now has the most-liked photo in the history of Instagram, with a photo of herself drinking a Coke racking up a solid AF 4.1 million likes as of this writing. This feat would be notable no matter what — it's even more proof that Gomez is a straight-up Insta queen — but there's something a little extra satisfying about the achievement because it unabashedly beats out her ex-boyfriend Justin Bieber, who previously held the record with a throwback photo of him kissing Gomez.

In all honesty, that right there is reason enough alone that the "Kill 'Em With Kindness" singer has just proven that she doesn't need Bieber (or to rely on the #Jelena relationship) to create her own success. Not that the Biebs necessarily needs to either, but dude is certainly one to throw it back to those Jelena days on Instagram — and there's no doubt he's well aware that every time he does so, the Insta hearts add up like crazy (clearly). Plus, Gomez is constantly asked in the press about her relationship with JB — despite her blunt and frequent insistence that she will no longer be discussing it — which, again, just makes her Insta achievement all the more satisfactory.

Sure, there's probably some correlation involved here (if she's the most followed person on the app, it would make sense that one of her pictures would also be the most liked, despite the fact that you don't have to be following someone to like a photo). But I am l-o-v-i-n-g the fact that the most-liked photo is simply a picture of herself, one where she looked flawless and fierce as hell, amping up that saturation to ensure that her Pantene hair totally compliments the red of the Coke can (which, of course, features a lyric from Gomez's 2015 hit "Me & The Rhythm").

Gomez's Instagram achievement literally just proves everything she has been saying in regards to Bieber her entire Revival press tour. Back when Billboard asked if his comeback at all inspired her record, she replied, "No. This is my time. I've deserved this. I earned it. This is all me." AND SHE JUST PROVED IT. While Bieber resorts to posting no-really-what-is-your-actual-motive Jelena throwbacks to gain likes, Gomez just did the same thing just by being herself and executing the whole thing so effortlessly. I'm obsessed.

And the best part about it is that her strategy is more simple than you think.

"I'm not sure there's a method to my madness," she told The Hollywood Reporter in a new interview, noting that she never set out to become the most followed person on the app.

"It comes in a moment when I capture something happening, and I go, 'Oh, that would be great for Instagram. I should post it,'" she revealed. "I know it's boring, but that's genuinely what I do."

And clearly, it seems to be working out pretty well for her. Keep on doin' you, girl. Because sure, you can "kill 'em with kindness," but you can also kill 'em with Instagram likes. And Gomez just keeps slaying.
