Praise Jesse Custer, 'Preacher' Season 2 Is Coming

There's nothing quite like Preacher, as pretty much all fans can agree. It pushes the limits of genre television to weird, crazy, hilarious, and always unexpected heights. I can't believe that Season 1 is almost over. So, although Preacher is returning for Season 2 in 2017 with another 13 episodes, what can you watch while you wait? Your hiatus journey could take several paths.

For one thing, there are comic book characters all over television these days — with just more and more to come. I can't wait for Cloak and Dagger on Freeform next year, and Legion on FX. I know that Preacher fans are excited for the anti-hero driven The Punisher series on Netflix as well. A new adaptation of The Tick is coming to Amazon soon. There's a lot to look forward to this year. Being a fan of comic books has never been cooler, and that's kind of amazing.

However, as far as what to watch ASAP to cure your Preacher withdrawal woes, here are a few suggestions. Whether it's a tonal match, drawn from the world of graphic novels, or featuring one of your new Preacher favorites, I can match you with something perfect.

1. Misfits

Not only were Preacher stars Ruth Negga and Joe Gilgun in this British series, (as well as former Game of Thrones baddie Iwan Rheon in a much more sympathetic role) but it has the same mix of dark humor and comic book insanity as Preacher — though Misfits is inspired by superhero and comic book characters rather than adapted from any specific graphic novel source material.

2. Hannibal

Or Bryan Fuller's other shows Pushing Daisies, Dead Like Me, and the upcoming American Gods. Basically, f you like the tone of Preacher and its lush, cinematic look, take this hiatus and become obsessed with Fuller.

3. True Blood

Because vampires, duh. Lucy Griffiths is in it too. Don't let people fool you into thinking this show is "just" a romance. It's not "just" anything. It gets crazy.

4. Buffy The Vampire Slayer

Preacher gets into darker issues because it's dealing with religion, and Buffy gets deep because... High School, basically.

5. The Walking Dead

While some fans may have gotten into Preacher during the TWD hiatus, there are probably some viewers who started watching for other reasons. To you, I say, watch The Walking Dead! I would also shout out Fear The Walking Dead, which is getting better and better.

6. Agent Carter

Especially if your favorite Preacher character is Tulip — and why wouldn't she be. Plus, Dominic Cooper reprises his role as Howard Stark from Captain America: The First Avenger, and he's one of the funniest parts of the show.

7. The Flash

As far as straight comic book adaptations go, The Flash is probably my favorite and, since Preacher is DC Comics, appropriate.

8. Supergirl

Then again, you've gotta catch up on Supergirl before it hits the CW. It's a lot... cheerier than Preacher, but the mythology is just as intricate.

9. Archer

There's action. There's comedy. How can you go wrong?

10. Freaks and Geeks

Why not toss a tip of the hat to Executive Producer Seth Rogen's first, and breakout, role? Plus, if you love Preacher like I do, chances are you can relate.

11. Jessica Jones

I mean honestly, if you haven't watched Jessica Jones yet, what are you doing with your life? It's perfect for fans of more mature comics like Preacher, there are definitely some similarities between Jessica and the three heroes of the AMC series, and it's got a dark sense of humor to boot. Let Preacher be your in to what else is on television these days — there really is a lot of good stuff.
