LC's Breakup With Jason Was Rough

As a longtime fan of The Hills, I was thrilled when I found out that Lauren Conrad would be doing a show called The Hills: That Was Then, This Is Now in honor of the iconic show’s tenth anniversary. Besides checking in with LC, I wanted to know all of the behind-the-scenes dirt I could, and boy, did Lauren deliver. She spoke a lot about what it was like to be 18 and filming a reality show, what dating was like, and what breakups (friendship and romantics) were like while filming. It turns out that Lauren’s breakup with then-boyfriend Jason Wahler was super emotional, but not for the reasons we all thought when watching it.

Lauren explained on the reunion that she knew at that point that Jason was addicted to drugs (specifically cocaine) and alcohol, and it was hurting their relationship. She was sad to split with Jason, but she felt worse because she knew that there would be no one looking after Jason if she was gone. Lauren explained that he had no friends and no family around, so if his addiction were to get worse, who would know? Those tears were mourning not only a relationship, but contemplating the trouble that Jason could eventually get himself into.

Lauren went on to explain that Jason is now clean and sober, and it just goes to show you that what we see on reality television (if you didn’t know it already) is just half, nay, a quarter of the story. Perhaps Jason wasn’t ready to visit his demons on television or perhaps no one knew how bad his additions were, but MTV made it seem like Lauren was really sad to break up with her boyfriend. Instead, she was scared for his safety — isn’t this truth so much more interesting than what we saw on the show? That’s reality television for you.
