Beyonce's First VMA Dress Looks Familiar

by Jessica Willingham

The 2016 VMAs are upon us, and I can't wait to witness this year's fashion. Anything can happen, because the MTV Video Music Awards brings out the best and boldest artists in the game, including, of course, Beyonce herself. Let's take a look back at Beyonce's first VMA dress for a refresher to prove why she is the Queen.

Beyonce first appeared at the VMAs in 2000 as the fierce front woman for Destiny's Child. Bey and bandmates Kelly Rowland and Michelle Williams took home the Moon Man for best R&B Video, and in matching corsets no less. Destiny's Child came (and slayed) in coordinating black leather and sequined ensembles, designed by House of Deréon — the fashion brand co-owned by Beyonce and her mom Tina.

Rowland showed off her edgy style with a choker and shorts, while Williams wore leather trousers and boots. Beyonce kept it classic with cap sleeves and a floor-length skirt. She topped it all off with hoop earrings and smoky cat eye, and honestly this look would probably fly today as well.

The outfit reminds me of Beyonce's 2016 Met Gala dress, a bedazzled latex gown. Beyonce's style point of view is laser sharp and sixteen years later (omg) we are still watching her rule red carpets with her very personal sense of style.

Yep, even back then Bey was blending strength and beauty in her fashion choices. She always takes the stage in tough textiles and sparkling suits.

I love how Bey perfectly mixes femininity and strength.

Even though Bey is a one-woman show these days, she still loves matching outfits. She was just spotted in matching suit with hubby Jay-Z.

One thing is for sure: Beyonce is willing to take fashion risks, and they definitely pay off. I can't wait to see what gorgeous, badass outfit she wears this year!
