10 Fall 2016 Makeup Trends To Recreate

by Kelli Acciardo

We already knew that a vampy gothic pout is making a comeback in a big way this fall, since the runways were covered with them, as were the celebs at this year's Met Gala (oh hey, Tay). But what about the other eye, cheek, brow, and lip trends that were spotted at New York, Paris, Milan, and London Fashion Weeks? Here are the top ten fall 2016 makeup trends you need to know about, according to celebrity makeup artists.

Everything from raccoon-chic peepers, to skin-perfecting foundation coverage, and sparkly, diamond-esque cheekbones were just as popular as the dark lip. I for one can't wait to get in on that pretty sparkle look that works for your face or your lids and I have the perfect product to help you achieve it!

I spoke to the world's best makeup artists, including Sarah Lucero, Sonia Kashuk, the team at Kevyn Aucoin, and Alejandro Falcon, to see what they loved, plus what's actually wearable this season. So many backstage beauty favorites can cause the general population to shriek if you walked down the street actually rocking them, but I promise these showstoppers will make people stop and stare in a good way.

1. Fully-Rimmed Eyes

Sonia Kashuk Dramatically Intensifying Kajal Gel Eyeliner in Black 01, $9, target.com

"Charcoal-lined eyes reminiscent of the early aughts were everywhere during Fall 2016 fashion week," says Sonia Kashuk, Makeup Artist and Founder of Sonia Kashuk Beauty. "This throwback style was paired with sultry shadows at Versace and Philosophy, drawn thick and heavy at Monique Lhuillier and Emilio Pucci, softly smudged at Chloe and Herve Leger, and left bare as the main focal point at Ashley Williams and 3.1 Philip Lim."

The most important part? "The emphasis on the lower lashline," Kashuk tells me. "The great thing about this trend is it's achieved with an everyday item most women already have in their makeup bag and it's customizable to whatever look you are trying to create." Still, you should proceed with caution. Kashuk warns, saying that "lining the inner waterline of the lower lashline shuts down the eye, making them appear smaller." The overall result will give you a super sexy stare though, which is "perfect for nighttime wear!"

2. Rock ’n’ Roll Smoky Shadow

"Chic-rock eyes popped up at all the hottest shows this season," says Kashuk. "Super-smudgey and intensely pigmented, this smoldering style stood out at Elle Saab, Moschino, and Alberta Ferretti." If you're not into super-dark eyes, Kashuk suggests trying the toned-down version featured at H&M by using a gunmetal grey instead of a black. "Apply the gunmetal color from lashline to just beyond the crease, packing on pigment until the desired depth is achieved. Then, take a black liner to the upper lashline followed by a smudge brush (Core Tools Smudge Brush) to blend the black out, gradiating color into the gunmetal for a simple smokey effect. My new Instant Smoke Stick in Gunsmoke is the perfect, portable 2-in-1 product to re-create this trend."

3. Peach Lips

Susan Posnick Coloressential Lipstick in South Beach, $21, susanposnick.com

"We are going to see a lot of peach-colored lips for fall," says Susan Posnick, celebrity makeup artist and founder of Susan Posnick Cosmetics. "Not quite a nude — since it has a bit more color — but the perfect peach that looks really great with the heavy black liner that will be on trend. Karlie Kloss has been doing this a lot."

4. Jewel-Toned Eyes

Rituel de Fille Ash & Ember Eye Soot in Viscera, $27, ritueldefille.com

Vapour Organic Beauty Multi-Use Palette in Flame, $46, vapourbeauty.com

"This Fall, try wearing warm and jewel-toned reds worn on the eye for opulent color with a touch of edge," says celebrity makeup artist Michelle Ramos (who glams up Lorde, the Kardashians and Emily Ratajkowski). "Rituel de Fille Ash & Ember Eye Soot in Viscera is the perfect rich cranberry shade, because it can be worn as a subtle liner, a dramatic smoky eye, or a base for dry shadows to add depth to the color. If you want more of sheer shade, try the Vapour Organic Beauty Multi-Use Palette in Flame."

5. Satin Skin

Stila Stay All Day Foundation, $35, stilacosmetics.com

Celebrity makeup artist Sarah Lucero tells me that we're going to start seeing people maximizing one feature and letting the rest of the face remain more natural looking. Think: "satin skin with a touch of unexpected shine and sheen on the cheekbones," says Lucero. "Use Stila Stay All Day Foundation layered over my favorite face cream by Luzern. This magic combo makes skin look so dewy and plump! I also love using liquid and cream blushes for a fresh flush on the cheeks."

6. Modern Gothic

Tom Ford Lip Color in Dark and Stormy, $53, bloomingdales.com

Hourglass Femme Rouge Velvet Crème Lipstick in Nocturnal, $30, net-a-porter.com

"Deep shades of plum and bordeaux juxtaposed with flawless skin and minimal eye makeup was a huge trend for FW 2016 fashion week, as seen on the runways of fashion’s royalty: Dior, Marc Jacobs, Louis Vuitton and Marni," says celebrity makeup artist Moani Lee. "We also saw this trend hitting the red carpet, as seen on Taylor Swift for The Met Gala and Rooney Mara at the Oscars. Some of my favorite gorgeous gothic lip shades are Tom Ford in Bruised Plum or Dark and Stormy and Hourglass’ Femme Rouge Velvet Crème Lipstick in Nocturnal."

7. Diamond Cheekbones & Eyes

Kevyn Aucoin Exotique Diamond Eye Gloss in Moonlight, $38, barneys.com

Viviana Martin, Director of Pro Artist Relations at Kevyn Aucoin tells me that "one of the biggest trends I have seen for Fall is glowy eyes and cheekbones. This look is not about shimmer, but more of a glossy, slick, chic look. Kevyn Aucoin has mastered a new formula that can create this exact effect and not leave a greasy feeling. You saw it on the runways at Marchesa and DKNY.”

8. Skin-Perfecting Foundation

Kevyn Aucoin Etherealist Foundation, $58, kevynaucoin.com

"This Fall season the complexion is meant to look like a medium-coverage face with a glowy finish," says Martin. "The new Kevyn Aucoin Etherealist Foundation is perfect to achieve this look and it's great on all skin types, providing different shades no matter your tone. You saw these beautiful visages on the runways of Milly, J.Mendel, Rebecca Minkoff, Reem Acra and Lela Rose."

9. Matte Reds

Osmosis Colour Longwear Lipstick in Sassy and Passion, $25, osmosisskincare.com

"Red matte lip colors are coming back into fashion for Fall 2016," says celebrity makeup artist Alejandro Falcon (who's worked on Jennifer Lopez). "Since this Fall is more of a mix of intensities for lip colors than ever before, it's important to add bright colors to the lips so you don't look washed out. Matte formulas will be best to use, but you can wear a cream lip color as long as it's not too shiny or sparkly. Some of my favorite lip colors are the Osmosis Colour Longwear Lipstick in Sassy mixed with Passion, which creates this vibrant red-pink hue that's flattering on all skin tones. So remember, holiday means festival, fiesta, and celebration. You can go back to neutral after the New Year!"

10. '70s Glam

Stila Stay All Day Waterproof Liquid Eyeliner in Intense Black, $22, ulta.com; Stila Smudge Pot in Black, $22, ulta.com

"I'm loving the '70s glamour influence in makeup right now and my favorite eye look is the one I created for Alice & Olivia's Fall 2016 show," says Lucero. "Lots of black liner and a combination of textures and finishes. I used three eye liners to create that cool graphic cat eye: liquid liner for a black finish, black smudge pot for a matte smudged sexy look, and Lionfish (a metallic bronze smudge stick) for a glossy finish! I also applied lots of Huge Extreme Lash Mascara on both the top and bottom lashes. Skip eye shadow all together, or just wash the lid with a sheer shimmer shadow in Wheat or Kitten."
