Miss America 2016 Ended Her Reign By Giving Back

by Caroline Gerdes

Crying, laughing, smiling, shaking, saying the wrong name, whatever happens live on television when a pageant winner is announced, it’s sure to be entertaining. But what happens after the winner is crowned? With the annual Miss America pageant coming up on Sunday, Sept. 11, viewers may be curious about how last year’s winner has been spending the final days of her reign. So, what is Miss America 2016 Betty Cantrell doing now?

As it turns out, wearing the crown is a full-time job and the former Miss Georgia has been doing it with style throughout the last year. And, don’t think that just because a new Miss America is going to be crowned on Sunday, Sept. 11, Cantrell’s job has gotten any easier. She’s staying busy through her last day as Miss America, according to her Instagram. From philanthropy, to events, to meetings, to public appearances, it seems that being Miss America is keeping Cantrell busy, and will do so until the very last moment of her reign, when a new winner is crowned. Here's what she's been up to in the weeks leading up the Miss America 2017 pageant, when she'll pass on her title to a deserving new woman.

She Just Made Her Last Official Appearance

Cantrell sang the national anthem at an Atlanta Braves game, marking her last official appearance as Miss America. It was fitting that she sang at the event, as she sang opera at the Miss America 2016 competition, which surely contributed to her victory.

She Worked With One Of Her Partners

In another appearance towards the end of her reign, Cantrell helped kids learn about agriculture with her platform partner, the American Farm Bureau. It looks like she's really been enjoying the work she's done as Miss America.

She Launched An Exciting New Instagram

Cantrell told Bustle that fans should check out @bettycantrellmusic on Instagram to stay up-to-date on her life after the crown. There are no posts on the page yet, but there are sure to be some after her reign ends on Sunday night.

She Finished Her Work With Children's Miracle Network Hospitals

As Miss America, Cantrell served as the National Goodwill Ambassador for Children's Miracle Network Hospitals, an organization that raises money for various children's hospitals across the country and in Canada. Though Cantrell's time with the organization is coming to an end, according to a blog post from the CMN, Miss America 2017 will step right into her role as National Goodwill Ambassador and continue to support these hospitals.

And Did A Last Round Of Press

In addition to her charity work, Cantrell is wrapping up her media appearances with some interviews, like this one with Access Hollywood.

She's Been Working Hard On This Year's Pageant

Cantrell has been promoting this year's pageant for a couple of weeks, has been on the ground at the preliminaries, and is full of advice for the next titleholder. Based on her reign, I'm sure Cantrell will continue to do great things, but first, she has to pass on the crown to another woman ready to make her own mark as Miss America.
