BSB's Residency Should Mean New Music... Right?

by Emily Lackey

If you are a Backstreet Boys fan, then the world is a happy place for you these days. It was announced on Friday that all five original members of the Backstreet Boys would be reuniting for a residency in Las Vegas in early 2017. But there’s even better news than that. Alongside the announcement that this beloved band is getting back together for the first time since their reunion tour in 2013, there’s also the news that they are going to be releasing a new album. But will the Backstreet Boys release new music in 2017? Or will it just be a re-release of the music fans already love? That is the question on every fan’s mind.

Let me tell you, though, that, if the news that the band is getting back together for a Las Vegas residency was enough to make you feel like you were flying today, then this news is going to make you question the existence of gravity. Nick Carter opened up to Entertainment Weekly exclusively on the red carpet of the Dead 7 premiere, and he spilled some very interesting details from the reunion and about the new album. He said that all five original members “have a deal with Live Nation” and that they have “signed a nine-show deal to do a test run in Vegas with a residency.” So that, Carter said, is “definitely going to happen.”

But, in addition to confirming the news that a residency was coming at the same event, Kevin Richardson also revealed that the band has been back in the studio making new — yes, new — music for their residency and for their album: “We’re definitely in the studio recording a brand new album. We’re gonna do a world tour first.” You guys. The Backstreet Boys are back, and they are in the studio.

This seems like huge news to me, and like new music from the band is definitely on the horizon. But the jury is still out on whether or not it will be in 2017. Like Richardson said, they have to do a world tour first. It seems like torture to have to wait, but, if waiting means the opportunity to see the Backstreet Boys live and in concert, then I will take it.
