Elia Esparza Took A Big Risk On 'The Voice'

by Jessica Molinari

"Thank you for being different!" Coach Adam Levine exclaimed these words after 23-year-old Elia Esparza sang completely in Spanish during The Voice Blind Auditions. While this was a big risk, it definitely paid off. Three of the four The Voice coaches hit their buttons in hopes to have Esparza joined their team. Adam Levine, Blake Shelton, and Miley Cyrus brought out their best for Esparza but, as always, only one could win. The lucky one amongst them was Coach Adam and the two are an unlikely match made in heaven.

After 11 seasons, The Voice coaches, especially Adam and Blake Shelton, have heard just about everything. But they've never heard anything like Esparza. Her performance of Selena's "Como La Flor" was unlike anything that's ever been performed on the show and that's exactly why it earned such high remarks. Esparza's Latin flavor mixed with her tone and technical prowess are perfect for The Voice. Now that she's on Team Adam, there's no telling how good she may get.

While Miley would've been my first choice for Esparza, I'm glad she chose Adam. The two are an unlikely pair, but sometimes that's a good thing. Adam will be able to tap into a new layer of Esparza's voice that hasn't been discovered yet. He'll help bring Esparza to new heights while also allowing her to be herself. With her risk-taking, confident personality and Adam's expertise, the two will be nearly unstoppable. As Adam said after her audition, Esparza is "refreshing"—and that's a quality that will get her far in this competition.
