DC's Maggie Sawyer Is Joining 'Supergirl'

by Leah Marilla Thomas

Monday's episode of Supergirl introduces the thankfully less impossible by the minute, a female President of the United States. However, Lynda Carter's guest appearance isn't the only new character being introduced this week who could cause a stir. Who is Maggie Sawyer on Supergirl ? According to the official CW description, Alex teams up with this new character to investigate an attack on the POTUS.

She will be played on the show by Floriana Lima, who you may know from The Family. According to TVLine, Maggie Sawyer works for the "Science Police" who deals with crimes that are any kind of unordinary. “We’ll be bumping into Maggie a lot," said executive producer Andrew Kreisberg in an interview, "and questions of jurisdiction will be coming up. Maggie is a strong proponent for alien rights, which is going to be [a theme].”

DC comic book fans, however, already know her name. In the comics, Maggie Sawyer is an inspector who moves to Metropolis to start over after coming out as as lesbian and divorcing her husband. She often works alongside Superman, prefers the Special Crimes Unit. and even moved to Gotham for a short period of time.

Does that mean that she is being introduced as a love interest for Alex, or someone else on the show? According to Entertainment Weekly, Kreisberg teased at the Television Critics Panel Association that a character in the Arrowverse would be coming out this year, and while I don't want to turn that into a guessing game, the introduction of a noted LGBT character from DC comics could be related to this.

Plus, Alex did just drop the hint that she hasn't dated in a while and would like that to change ASAP. Let's just see how this all plays out on Supergirl. With the president under attack, there may not be time for flirting just yet. It'll be interesting enough to see the DEO try to work alongside regular law enforcement on Supergirl. Anything else may have to wait.
