What Are You Wearing, Shailene?

by Mary Avant

In Hollywood, there are more starlets than days in the year, with new ones popping up every day to add to the list. That’s why it’s always refreshing to find a young Hollywood star who just has that little something extra, something different, that really sets her apart from the rest. Like, for example, Jennifer Lawrence with her hilarity and lack of filter or Lupita Nyong’o with her style, grace, and major acting chops. And the latest starlet to make that list may just be Shailene Woodley. The gorgeous Divergent actress is unashamedly quirky, whether she’s wearing five-finger shoes on the red carpet or abandoning cell phones and only buying used clothing.

That’s why it shouldn’t surprise us that the star’s style is just a little bit different from many of the big names on the red carpet. After all, Woodley may be the only person who could pull off a draped, hippie-glam gown with such ease. But even knowing about her extreme individuality, we still felt a little puzzled when we saw the outfit she showed up in to yesterday’s CinemaCon event.

Wearing a cropped, two-piece, khaki Dolce & Gabbana suit — with a white T-shirt layered under the sleeveless vest, no less — and a pair of crisp, white Keds, we were less than enthused over Woodley’s latest red carpet choice.

We’ll give Woodley this: She definitely wore it with panache, looking relaxed and confident on the red carpet and positively glowing with her bronzed skin, pink lip, and casually cool hair. And menswear is totally on trend right now, with everyone from Selena Gomez and Emma Watson to Scarlett Johansson and Nicole Kidman rocking the look within the last few weeks alone. But whether it’s the slightly baggy fit of the pant or the unnecessary T-shirt underneath, we just can’t get 100 percent on board with this look. (We will note, however, that she totally redeemed herself later that evening when she showed up to the CinemaCon Big Screen Achievement Awards in a majorly sexy, black satin pantsuit.)

Fortunately, we had both Cameron Diaz and Leslie Mann at the event to comfort us, as they showed up looking naturally gorgeous in their chic and sweet spring dresses. Like Woodley, Diaz opted for a neutral-toned look, wearing a gray Victoria Beckham dress with a white peekaboo hem. Styling the look with a simple white pump — a must-have this spring — and red lip, the actress looked effortlessly chic in her minimal ensemble.

Mann, on the other hand, gave us something a little brighter, looking like a ray of sunshine in her yellow and white pleated, ankle-length dress from Oscar de la Renta. Complementing the look with Biondi Castana heels, minimal makeup, and flowing blonde locks, she was the picture of spring style.

While Woodley’s unique style and sense of fearlessness on the red carpet is one of the things we most love about her, we’re just glad Mann and Diaz were there to distract us from her less-than-perfect ensemble this time around.
