Prince William Stands By Prince Harry About Meghan

by Jordana Lipsitz

When it was first revealed that Prince Harry was dating Meghan Markle, many ladies grew very disappointed, but once it became clear that the two were serious, those feelings changed to support for the happy couple. Some people, though, have criticized Markle, an actor on Suits, often for racist and sexist reasons. The criticism got to be so much that recently, Harry wrote a letter by way of Kensington Palace addressing the hatred Markle was receiving, and now, his brother William is showing his support for Harry and Markle in a rare statement.

At first, it was rumored that Prince William disapproved of Harry's letter, due to the royals' general policy of keeping mum on personal matters. But on Saturday, Nov. 26, William, via Kensington Palace, released a statement that said, "The Duke of Cambridge absolutely understands the situation concerning privacy and supports the need for Prince Harry to support those closest to him."

William's statement is, of course, a response to Harry's letter, which read, "The past week has seen a line crossed. His [Harry] girlfriend, Meghan Markle, has been subject to a wave of abuse and harassment. … Prince Harry is worried about Ms. Markle’s safety and is deeply disappointed that he has not been able to protect her. It is not right that a few months into a relationship with him that Ms. Markle should be subjected to such a storm.”

Harry, who is fifth in line for the throne, had stayed totally quiet on whether he and Markle were dating until his letter. All the cyber-bulling, offensive media coverage (one news group referred to Markle as "(almost) straight outta Compton") and overall racism (Markle is bi-racial) that his girlfriend was receiving apparently got to be too much for him to stay quiet about, and it's understandable that he chose to speak up. Still, it'd make sense if William were upset over his brother's public declaration, considering the tabloid frenzy over their family.

Yet thankfully, William seemed to understand the importance of protecting the people you care about no matter the potential backlash, likely due to his experience with media attention over his wife, Kate, and their children George and Charlotte.

Hopefully, the criticism over Markle will die down, as obviously, she doesn't deserve any hate from the public due to her relationship with Harry, especially backlash over her race. It's good to see, though, that if need be, she's got not one but two princes ready to jump in and defend her.
