What to Expect When You're Expecting Satan

by Kadeen Griffiths

Having a baby is one of the most terrifying things in the world. There's the whole pushing a small person out of your body part, but there's also all the stuff that comes before it. The morning sickness, the swelling and bloating, the pain, the doctor visits, and the freaking out over whether or not you really have what it takes to be a good mother. Now imagine all of that and the knowledge that your son or daughter is going to be the spawn of Satan. Welcome to the life of Zoe Saldana in NBC's upcoming remake of Rosemary's Baby.

When it was first announced that Saldana would be headlining the two part miniseries, the news was exciting on two different levels. The first level was classic horror movie excitement, because Rosemary's Baby goes up there with The Hand That Rocks the Cradle, The Exorcist, and The Omen on the list of movies you definitely shouldn't watch if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or already have a small child. The second level was representation excitement, because re-imagining the horror movie with a female lead of color is a step in the right direction for Hollywood. Then the first images from the series were released and we remembered, oh right, this is a horror movie.

NBC just released the first look at Rosemary's Baby in a 20 second trailer and Saldana and Patrick J. Adams make good use of that time to really strike the fear into your hearts. The speed with which their joy over their pregnancy turns to pure unfiltered creepiness is pretty remarkable. When you move from New York to Paris and find out that your luxury apartment came with a Satanic string attached, however, creepy is a huge understatement.
