He Inspired 'Royals,' But Doesn't Have Gold Teeth

by Mallory Schlossberg

So, THIS guy is her muse?! Interesting. MLB tweeted that Lorde met the guy who inspired "Royals," and no, he isn't the smarmy figure you thought he would have been. In fact, she's actually been rather vocal about who inspired the song, since the tune was met with some accusatory remarks — some folks thought it was racist. Chill yourselves, people. It's just that now she has had the opportunity to stand face-to-face with the guy.

The fellow who inspired the song, in case you were wondering, is the former Kansas City Royals third baseman, George Brett. (I know, I know, sports. I'm always lost when it comes to sports, except for the snacks in between. But I digress.) Anyway — get it? "Royals?"

Lorde told VH1 back in March that:

I had this image from the National Geographic of this dude just signing baseballs [...] He was a baseball player and his shirt said, ‘Royals.’ [...]It was just that word. It’s really cool.

Cool, cool — and that's the word that then inspired her. Apparently, Lorde just sits down with a bit of inspiration, puts a pen to paper, and creates smash hits. So it must have been pretty awesome for her to meet the man who inspired her thought on the word "royals," and who thereby launched her career.

Meeting the person who inspires you create something enormous has got to be quite a feeling.

Check out the tweet below of Lorde meeting this incidentally inspiring fellow:

And because it feels incredibly appropriate right now:
