Death is Coming to 'TVD' — For Real This Time

by Kaitlin Reilly

If you're a fan of the hit supernatural drama, you already know that being "dead" on The Vampire Diaries isn't always a permanent state. Ghosts like Alaric and Lexie show up for cocktail hour a few times a season. We shed a lot of tears over dead Jeremy only to have a strong spell bring him back. And then there's Bonnie, who straddles the line between the living and the dead on the daily as the "anchor" to the other side, proving how thin the line between the two worlds really is on the show.

Unfortunately for Elena and her friends, that line is about to become far more defined with the destruction of the other side: the way that The Vampire Diaries has showed death as a fluid state might no longer be true. That's unfortunate for the Mystic Falls gang, as death seems to be following these characters around. According to a TVD source, we'll see a whopping three more deaths during Season 5. This time, the source says, the deaths will be permanent.

Ordinarily, someone dying on The Vampire Diaries is about as newsworthy as Pretty Little Liars introducing another A-suspect red herring, but after finding out that these characters have little chance at returning, I'm starting to freak out. Why? Well, for one thing, we're running out of disposable characters to kill. There's no word on whether the deaths will be major (not like we really have to worry about Stefan, Damon, or Elena saying bye-bye forever) but given The Vampire Diaries track record, I have a feeling that the next death will hurt.

My predictions for the three deaths of the season? While I have a feeling that we're going to say goodbye to a few minor characters whom will barely make a blip on fans' radars, I think that The Vampire Diaries is just about ready to make a major character kill. Who do I think is next to go? You're not going to like this one, but... I'm thinking it's Jeremy who bites the dust. Why? It's all about Bonnie, baby.

Bonnie sacrificed her own life to bring back Jeremy from the dead, and is currently the next one who should be on her way out — with the other side rapidly deteriorating, Liv has already told Bonnie that there's no way that she won't need to say goodbye to her friends. We're all prepared for Bonnie to move on (is she even really alive, anyway?) but what if Jeremy makes the ultimate sacrifice as a payback for Bonnie's life-exchange at the end of Season 4?

My guess is that Jeremy finds out that Bonnie is dying, and uses another witch (perhaps Liv, who has a newly found affection for Bonnie) to make a sacrifice. I'm not going to pretend I know how that even would work, but knowing The Vampire Diaries, it's not out of the realm of possibilities. As much as it would suck to say goodbye to Jeremy, it would be the ultimate act of selflessness and a fitting way for his character to go.

That being said, I'm hoping that I'm wrong and that these three deaths are not from our beloved core cast. It's too sad to think that these guys have already held funerals for their returned-from-the-dead friends, and that they could need to once again. While I'd love it if The Vampire Diaries ended its season on a happier note, I'm afraid to say that Elena, Bonnie, and the rest of the group should definitely be investing in a few new black outfits — they're going to need them.

We feel you, girl.
