No One Does A Cover Quite Like Tori Amos

by Kristie Rohwedder

Singer/songwriter/fairy goddess living among mortals Tori Amos is currently touring to support of her fourteenth (!!!) studio album, Unrepentant Geraldines. The Unrepentant Geraldines Tour kicked off in Europe (you bet I can’t stop thinking about all of the Tatty bear photo ops) at the beginning of May, and during Thursday night’s Amsterdam stop, Amos performed a cover of Madonna’s “Frozen.” I'm sorry, one of my favorite musicians sang my favorite Madonna song? YEAH THANKS I'M DEAD. A recording of the performance is making the Internet rounds, which is understandable. Her rendition is all things gorgeous and haunting (even though it lacks the spooky dance club thunder-esque sounds of the Madonna original), and should be put in everyone's ears and eyes immediately.

If you see Amos in concert, you should be prepared for any and/or all of the following: 1) Amos's fantastic two piano stance, 2) multiple encores, 3) weeping audience members (yourself included), 4) your life to be changed, and 5) covers of not-Amos tunes. Amos is no-Tori-ous (sorry, I had to do it) for taking a stab at songs by other musicians, both on the stage and in the recording studio. The results? Always piping hot.

My god, do I love Amos's covers. Her voice! The piano! The Amos-y spin she puts on the songs! The feeeeeelings! Some of the covers are funny, some of the covers are devastating. All of the covers are flawless. There may or may not be a CD-R with a handwritten "Tori Amos Does Covers" label in my car at the moment. (How did I come about these recordings? Did someone give them to me? Did I obtain them via Kazaa or Limewire in the early '00s? I'LL NEVER TELL.)

Please watch and listen to her version of "Frozen." Get on my level:

Oof, this is so good. It gave me a FEVER. The antidote: MORE TORI AMOS COVERS. Here are some of my favorites:

"Running Up That Hill" by Kate Bush

The fairy goddess living among mortals begins with her own song "God," and then segues into "Running Up That Hill." We are not worthy.

"...Baby One More Time" by Britney Spears

I mean.

"Hallelujah" by Leonard Coen

She is not of this world.

"Case Of You" By Joni Mitchell

My hands go numb every time I watch/listen to this. I don't know what that means.

"Can't Get You Outta My Head" by Kylie Minogue

I love this performance a lot, but the crowd's reaction is phenomenal.

"Rooting For My Baby" by Miley Cyrus & "Three Babies" by Sinead O'Connor

She's just bein' Miley. Nothing compares 2 U, Amos.

"Smells Like Teen Spirit" by Nirvana

This might be the number one stunner.

There are many, many more, but I have to stop now. I'm a bottle of Mountain Dew away from ending up in a Tori Amos concert video K-hole.
