17 Stunning, Non-Diamond Engagement Rings To Lust Over

One night in 1947, a woman named Frances Gerety wrote the now-famous tagline that we're all familiar with: A diamond is forever. The campaign, created for De Beers, was so successful that Advertising Age named it the best advertising slogan of the 20th century. And it's no wonder why.

According to a report from Bain and Company, the hundreds of millions of dollars spent on this long-running ad campaign have had some seriously staggering effects. For example, the number of brides in the US who received diamond engagement rings in 1939 was only 10%. By the end of the 20th century, that number jumped to 80%.

Last year, The New York Times reported that Americans spent almost $7 billion on diamond rings in 2012.

All of that being said, there are plenty of other minerals on the market that are just as worthy as a spot on your ring finger. Remember, you're going to be wearing this ring every day for a very long time, so it should be a style that suits you — whether that means a diamond or a colorful gemstone.

Here, 17 non-diamond engagement rings for anyone who isn't totally sold on the idea that diamonds are a girl's best friend. Let the pinning commence.
