This Was A Seriously Stylish Flick

by Shorey Andrews

Back in 1986, Andie Walsh stood up for every young girl that had ever been bullied in school by taking a stand and staying true to her who she is. Growing up with very little, Andie took it upon herself to shop at thrift stores and pull together outfits of her own creation each day. This act did not earn her any brownie points with the mean girls at school, but being comfortable in her own skin was more important to the Pretty In Pink protagonist then impressing the masses. Girl power, yo.

Though she set the standard for originality and flair, Andie's volcanic ensembles — as her best friend Duckie so eloquently dubbed them — were not the only outfits to score style points in Pretty In Pink. Her co-worker Iona busted out the best in '80s grunge, while the boys, Blane and Steff, played it sartorially safe (though on point) with linen suits and polo shirts. And, who could forget the adorable Duckie in what are possibly the best dancing shoes from any teen movie in the '80s? Every outfit told a story and created a buildup to arguably the best handmade prom dress in decades.

Ready to relive all the awesomeness? Take a look back now at 12 of Pretty In Pink's fashion highlights that still impress us today.

1. THE VOLCANIC ENSEMBLE

Always ready to worship the ground she walks on, Duckie was constantly complimenting and encouraging Andie's creative nature and ability to think outside the box. His style wasn't too shabby either!

2. RADICALLY RETRO EYE WEAR

Beyond the typical Ray Ban wayfarers, Pretty In Pink had some radical looking eye wear. Although, I'm not sure if these same looks would be loved the same way today.

3. THE LADIES GYM UNIFORM

C'mon, these uniforms are kind of cute, no?!

4. EVERY SINGLE OUTFIT IN THIS SCENE

These outfits Andie, Iona, and Duckie were draped in just scream '80s fever. It's the best of the best in one fabulous scene.

5. STEFF'S LINEN SUITS

Not only did Steff rock multiple linen suits during the film, but this guy seemed to always forget to button up his dress shirt. And for that young James Spader, we thank you.

6. PLAID AND SHOULDER PADS

Andie's only female friend at school proved you should never mess with a women in shoulder pads. This was one of my first introductions to the power suit.

7. ANDIE'S DOILY COLLAR

It may not have been her best fashion moment in the film, but Andie's lace collar is one to remember.

8. THESE GRUNGE WORTHY LOOKS

Iona's style was all over the place in the film, but perhaps her best look was at the beginning when she did the punk rock scene proud with this incredible ensemble.

9. IONA'S PROM THROWBACK

That scene where Iona shows Andie how she dressed for her prom was classic in every way.

10. DUCKIE'S SHOES

A classic in their own right, Duckie's shoes made bigger waves than majority of the outfits featured in the film. For every piece he wore, a look was not complete without the duck man's statement kicks.

11. DUCKIE'S PROM ATTIRE

Talk about slick! Duckie pulled out all the stops in his dapper looking suit for prom.

12. AND FINALLY...ANDIE'S HAND MADE PROM DRESS

The climax of Pretty In Pink brings us to Andie's prom. After she had been humiliated by her classmates and left broken hearted by rich boy Blane, this gal was still somehow able to pull herself together for the big day. With the help of her father and Iona, Andie mashed together two pink prom dressing to create her last stylish statement with her best friend Duckie by her side.
