The situation and the timing are incredibly tragic. Becca Tobin's boyfriend Matt Bendik was found dead in a Philadelphia hotel room on Thursday in a situation that mirrors the tragic loss of Cory Monteith almost a year ago. Tobin, who plays Kitty Wilde on Glee, was with Bendik in Philadelphia and was seen out on the town with him as recently as Wednesday. No details as to the cause of death have come to light yet.
According to TMZ's report, which was confirmed by one of Bendik's friends, Bendik's body was discovered by a hotel maid. He was 35 years old when he died. Exactly how this tragedy came to be is still a mystery, as Bendik had been very active on his Instagram page the day before his body was found and everything seemed business as usual. Tobin's own Instagram page is full of loving pictures of herself and Bendik enjoying each other's company and looking every inch like a happy couple, so to see her placed in the same position that her co-star Lea Michele found herself in back in 2013 is heartbreaking. At the very least, we can take comfort in the fact that Tobin has someone to talk to who would understand her situation perfectly.
Bendik was the owner of nightclubs across the country, one of which, the DBA Hollywood in Los Angeles, posted a tribute to him on their official Twitter page late Thursday night.
Although we had no confirmation that Kitty Wilde was going to appear in the shortened Glee season 6, it's a relief now to know that the show is ending and that the final season will have fewer episodes than we thought. Tobin could use the downtime to be around family and friends as she tries to heal from this powerful loss.
Hopefully, Bendik's cause of death won't be a mixture of alcohol and heroin like Monteith's, if only because losing two Glee-affiliated people in the same circumstances from the same cause within a year of one another would just be too much dramatic irony to bear. Our thoughts are with Tobin and the entire Glee family at this difficult time.
