Tasteless Malaysia Airlines Tweets Need To Stop

by Abby Johnston

Right now, we know very little about the Malaysia Airlines flight that went down over the Russia-Ukraine border. As with all developing stories, there is a lot that will emerge over the next few hours, days, and weeks. But there is one thing that we are 100 percent sure of: Offhand tweets about Malaysia Airlines and the two crashes within four months are completely tasteless.

As for the few things that we do know for certain, a Ukrainian official has confirmed that all 295 people aboard died in the crash. Which should be the absolute first thing that you remember before you feel like making a joke about the safety or integrity of the airline.

Malaysia Airlines lost contact with the Boeing 777 over Ukraine airspace, while it made its way from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur on Thursday. Early reports from Anton Gerashenko, an adviser to Ukraine's interior ministry, said that the plane was struck by a missile fired from an anti-aircraft system known as a BUK launcher.

In light of all of that information, some people are taking to Twitter to flex their comedy chops despite the death of 300 people. Malaysia Airlines posted that it had lost contact with the plane at 11:36 EST. It took no time at all for people to throw their two cents in.

Also — using a plane emoji right now seems a little weird.
