Why J. Law Should Wear Designers That Aren't Dior

by Rosie Narasaki

Jennifer Lawrence recently renewed her contract with Dior, and get this: it's a 15-million-plus contract that spans three whole years.

Dior made a wise decision, because I think we all know by now that J. Law is here to stay (two Oscar noms in as many years? Can you say "career longevity?"). Three years may have been a gamble on some actresses (especially actresses in Jennifer's age category), but she's more than a safe bet. After all, we're going to be seeing her at some of the biggest red carpets and award ceremonies, which may well be worth the multi-million sum they're paying her.

So, it's a good deal for Dior, but what about Jennifer? Sure, she's set for life (and then some), but her red carpet style might be getting the short end of the stick here. I'm not saying her "before Dior" fashion was perfect (it wasn't), but her almost-exclusive deal with Dior certainly hasn't done her any favors. They've done her right a few times (most notably at the 2013 Academy Awards), but the vast majority of the outfits they've dressed her in have been mediocre to sub-par. She should be wearing more of other designer's looks, and here's a few reasons why:

1. Dior ages her

Okay, this is partially her fault (or rather, her makeup artist's fault; she looks like Michael Kors, and not in a good way), but Dior should not be making her look like a Real Housewife, even if she does enjoy the show. She's only 23!

She should be dressing her age in fun looks... like this Tom Ford she wore to last year's Vanity Fair Oscars Party:

See? Tom Ford gets her!

2. Dior doesn't flaunt

This Dior number was pretty enough, but it was so simple (and more than a little bit boring)! Even the more dramatic looks felt somewhat limited, and with Jennifer's enviable figure, she should be wearing things with a little more panache — like she did with Prabal Gurung:

I mean, seriously. Before she started her contract with Dior, she actually wore Prabal Gurung a lot, and his creations always brought the drama in a major way.

3. Dior doesn't do body-con

Historically, Jen's looked best in more body-con looks. Dior can do a defined waist well, but their looks tend to be a little too structured for that second-skin look that Jennifer can really rock (hey, she is Mystique, after all). That's why she should be wearing more Calvin Klein, like this:

And certainly, like this:

One of her best looks ever, IMHO.

So, that's the deal: I'm officially prescribing more Tom Ford, Prabal Gurung, and Calvin Klein for Ms. Lawrence here. What do you think?
