The SpongeBob Trailer Is Here

by Mallory Schlossberg

Who lives in a pineapple under the sea? SpongeBob SquarePants! Who's now also make the switch to 3D? SpongeBob SquarePants! As weird as it was to hear that the the cartoon sponge was making the transition to live-action, it's not too surprising. CGI is the way to be these days! And now, you can see how he looks as a fully-CGI-materialized sponge in the SpongeBob SquarePants Movie: Sponge Out of Water trailer. Because, yes — apparently, we need (another) feature-length movie about a sponge and his saltwater cohorts.

The film, which follows SpongeBob and his pals as they sojourn out of their pineapple under the sea and out of the water on a quest to save their sea world, asks the obvious question — what happens when sea creatures makes the transition into the real beach world? The answer, apparently, is sexy beach hijinks. Patrick has a thing for ladies who eat ice cream because ice cream gets him goin'. Of course, there's more to it, as they fight to save the day in their new, updated-for-2015 CGI forms. It's also probably worth mentioning that Digital Spy has reported that Antonio Banderas will play an evil pirate, and if there's anyone to battle SpongeBob, it's Antonio Banderas as a pirate.

You may have mixed feelings about the movie — and that's totally okay. The 2004 animated film was received rather tepidly, and it's also weird to see an animated fixture from your younger days become CGI. Change is hard, man. It's even stranger to see a sponge jump out at you in the movie theater in 3D — that may take some adjustment and emotional preparation. Fortunately, right now, you only have to adjust to the CGI and real-life pirate bit. You have until 2015 to decide if you're comfortable with a 3D SpongeBob.
